ABS ESP and BAS lights went nuts!!

Hi guys,

I was driving on the highway on my way home last night, tapped on the breaks a little to let some driver cut into my lane. The next thing I know, my 430 started beeping like no tomorrrow.....there were a total of 3 malfunctions displayed, the ABS, ESP, and BAS light all went on simultaneouly. After I got home, I restared the car then everything went back to normal again, NO Malfunctions.

Did this happen to anyone before? I think I'm gonna make an appointment to get it checked out today.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Ken

I have a 2000 CLK430. I have had the same thing happen to me twice. I noticed that it happened when I was driving in snow.... I live in upstate NY. I called road side and they told me to take into the dealer...they couldn't troubleshoot it over the phone.
I restarted the car and the errors went away.
I took it to the dealer the next day but they said that everyhting checked out ok. They said it may have been a frozen sensor or something.

thanks

The problem might very well be related to cold weather. I live in Chicago, and it was about 15 degrees when it happened last night. I also have snow tires from tirerack.com installed, maybe that was related also......anyways thanks for the reply!

It usually happens if your battery is low, or was disconnected.

Malfunction

Out of curiousity, did you happen to notice if the malfunction was registering on the multifunction display you control via the buttons on your steering wheel? I think it might be the fourth screen. If it did register, I think it is supposed to be stored in the malfunction message memory, making it that much easier to be diagnosed and repaired. However, I believe it can also happen if your charging voltage falls below 10 volts. In any event, I would have it checked immediately.

This happened to me a few weeks ago. It started out happening once in a while and went away after I restarted the car. It finally began happening every time I drove the car. I took it to the dealer and found out that it was a bad brake switch which was replaced under warranty.

I also noticed that during the malfunction the brake lights were not working either.

bring it to the dealer and have the sensors replaced....

I used to have that problem where 3 malfunctions would go off and then it would disappear after I turn off and turn on the car. I brought it to the dealer and asked them about it and they said it was a common problem and they knew exactly what to do. They replaced some sensors and never had the problem again. The problem's very similar because I would notice that the malfunctions, sometimes only 2, when I tap on the break. Good luck in getting the problem fixed.

It's very common, but it never happened to my '00 430 until I got my brakes worked on by MB . Restarting the car fixes it.

I think theres two brake switches [on the pedal] and if the 2nd one operates and the first doesnt then this comes on ..

Happened on my wifes ML and they changed one of those switches.

I am having this exact same problem... BAS.. ABS.

Does anyone know if this is covered under the Starmark warranty?

Also... One of my keys stopped working. (Ignition not remote) I know that is covered under the regular warranty, but is that also covered under the Starmark? I would like to go into the dealership with as much information as possible so I don't get the run-around on the warranty items.

Thank in advanced!

Russ

Had the exact thing happen on my 01 clk 430, when suddenly hit the brakes to avoid being cut off, BAS/ABS/ESP lights stayed on and then went off after I turned off car for a few hours. The dealer did a diagnostic and replaced the stop lamp switch part # 1 001-545-31-09. They should be able to read the computer on your car and what fault code appeared. Hope this helps. By the way, fixed under warranty

My car is no longer under warranty and the same 3 malfunctions come up after about half an hour of driving and then pressing the brakes. They go away when you turn the car off and turn it back on. Its REALLY annoying and I want this fixed, I see one part number posted but someone said theres 2 sensors. Could someone give me the part #'s or at least the name sof these sensors so I can replace them? Thanks.

I don't remember but I can look it up in that service sheet that I kept from that service in my car. Unfortunately my car is not with me because it's getting it tinted but as soon as I find it I'll let you know next week.

Okay, went down to Fletcher Jones in Newport Beach and picked up the stop lamp switch for $16.80. Unscrewed 4 screws and replaced the part in under 15 minutes. Took the car out for two drives and the malfunctions haven't come up as of yet.

Thanks alot guys, just one more question, if my stop lamp switch was malfunctioning, wouldn't that mean that my brake lights wouldn't turn on? Cuz my brake lights do turn on. I also tried turning the wheel all the way left and then right and it didn't work.

Not necessarily, my brake lights functioned perfectly but I still got the errors on the ESP/BAS.

Me Too

This has happened to me twice last year. Both times all three warnings go off and go away on their own. Took it to the dealer and they replaced some sensors...took two times for them to get it right. But if your car is Starmark, then it'll be covered.

yaw right sensor - replace it?

Hi, My ABS/ESP/BAS lights come on a few times a week after hitting the brakes. They never go on while just driving. I tool it to the dealer and they said both my yaw right sensor ($1100 installed) and my stop light switch are not working properly and need to be replaced. I questioned the yaw-right sensor and they were confident that it needed to be replaced too. Should I try the stop light switch first before replacing the yaw right sensor or should i trust the dealer and have them both installed (my car is no longer under warranty).

To me, it seems one (stop light switch) may be causing the faults in the other. Any opinions?

thanks,
dave

The stop light switch is very cheap (~20 dollars) and easy to replace (instructions earlier in this thread). I would do that first and see if it works, then proceed with the yaw sensor. I replaced my stop light switch and my lights still go off after driving about 15 minutes. Anyone have any idea what it is? (please no replies saying replace "the sensor", be more specific).
