OK, so now it's stupid question time...
Does the rear foglight on the CLK only lluminate on the left side? And is it supposed to be so bright? I thought that I had a light out, but my service guy told me that it only illuminates on one side - "it's a European thing," he said. I assume that this is correct, but you know, I figured I'd ask the experts here.
I recently lost my manual and had to order a new one, so I apologize if this info is set forth in there.
Thanks,

Umm, it's not supposed to be a rear foglight. Your light switch has 5 settings: left rear, right rear, off, parking lights, lights. The rear lights are indeed a "European thing."
You see, in other areas of the world where street lights aren't as abundant as in the U.S., roads usually are totally dark. Now what these lights are used for is say you park your car on one of these dark roads, on the right side of the road, you would turn on your left rear light, or if you parked on the left side of the road, you would turn on your right rear light. These lights aren't meant to be used when driving around in, this is to show the edge of your car from the side of the road so some idiot doesn't come crashing into it as they drive down this road.
It looks cool if someone else knows about them (i.e. since not all cars, especially those meant for U.S. don't have it.) However if someone doesn't know about them, they will say one of your rear bulbs is burned.
Hope this helps.

Safet: What you say is all correct, except that, in addition to the left/right rear lights, if you turn on the headlights and pull the switch out once, you turn on the front driving lights. If you pull the light switch out further, you turn on the rear (single) lamp. I don't use it as I find it irritating when driving behind another car with it on. I believe that most drivers don't realize that they have this light on. (As an aside, although most of the few models of cars which have this feature only have one rear light, the Olds Aurora seems to have two lights.)

I don't think its a European thing at all. I was told that the single lamp (they call it a fog lamp), was designed to be put in there so that it would be asymetrical. It was designed to be a bit annoying and attract the attention of people behind you (in fog, dense rain, etc). So the reason that you find it a bit annoying driving behind someone serves the sole purpose that it was designed for.

I agree with anthem..... I've been on the highway behind people in Volvo's who have their rear fog light on and obviously don't know it....it was a clear night!!! But my point is just being on the left side catches the driver's behind you attention. If you had two fog lights back there then it would just be two bright lights....but with only one you notice something odd....and eye catching.
I use my rear fog light always when I feel I'm having a hard time seeing where the car in front of me is. Then I don't have to worry about the guy behind me not seeing me, that one red light is blinding him!!!
