with the myriad of wheel designs, why choose the typical Corvette style, which seems alien to and incongruous on a Mercedes-Benz??

I wouldn't think of taking my wheels out on the track! Those wheels are my track wheels with track tires (for more grip). You should take a look at my gallery (click on the www link below) and check out my everyday wheels. I have to warn you though, pictures don't do them justice. And they definitely are not common like Chevy wheels. I have 1 of 2 sets ever made for a Mercedes!

that explains it - I never associated this pix with your car because of the corvette-style wheels. Additionally the camera distortion make it look like a c-coupe transplant...as opposed to:
