What weight oil? Where to buy it? What size crush washer?
I'm about due for an oil change on the W208. With my other cars, I buy Mobil 1 full synthetic from WalMart in 5 quart containers for $21. That's just about as cheap as I can find it anywhere.
I noticed from the posts that most people are using 0 W 40. I was at WalMart today and it looks like they don't carry 0 W 40. Should I just go with 10W30 or 10W40? or anyone know where I can get 0W40 for about the same price? (99 CLK430 w/ 140,000 mi)
Also, I noticed from the other threads that most people who are draining their oil from underneath, instead of using a top-sider, are replacing the crush washer. What size crush washer do I need to pick up?

i was wondering why you say the lighter weight oil is better then the heavier weight, arent you guys in a warmer section of california ? 10 - 40 or 10 - 30 will not harm the engine at all. If it was to get close to freezing or below all the time then the 5-30 would be a valid point.

I was just at Pep Boys and a quart of Mobil 1 is about $6.50. It's only $4.00 a qt at Wal-Mart ($21.00 for the 5 qt container), but they didn't have any 0W40.
Spend the extra $20 buying 0w40 from Pep Boys or go with the 10W40 from Wal-Mart?
For the rest that do your own oil changes at home, what are you paying for your oil and where are you buying it?

Motor oil thickness is measured in cS (or CS, depending on the reference). This is CentiStokes. Stokes' Law is used to quantify the viscosity of a fluid. Oils are typically "approved" by auto manufacturers based on their ability to be at the correct thickness (cS) in the shortest amount time. At 75 degrees F, every motor oil I know of is too thick to do its job. That includes 0W40 and is especially true of 10W-anything. The thickness impedes flow, and the decreased flow is why most engine wear occurs during cold starts.
I use Mobil1 0W40 because I don’t know the cS rating of every motor oil out there. However, I do know Mobil1 0W40 meets the MB 229.3 lubrication spec required by Mercedes-Benz powertrain engineers.
The crush washer is less than 15 cents at most places that carry the Fleece filter.

No luck so far... I went to Costco this evening and they only had Mobil 1 in 5W30 and 10W30.
The crush washers at Pep Boys were about $3 for a pack of 4 but I'm not sure what size to get, so it looks like I'll just take mine out this weekend and drive another car into Pep Boys to pick up the washer while the oil is draining.
Anyone else want to chime in on the cheapest place to buy Mobil 1 0W40?

It would be great if I can get 10 qts of oil for the CLK for about $40 as well.
I'm just tired of paying my local shop $90 every 2 1/2 months for the oil change when I can do it myself for half that price...I've really been racking up the miles lately.

There aren't much cheaper alternatives for oil and filter. You need a fleece filter and some MB229.31 approved oil. The Mobil 1 5W30 is a hydrocracked Group III petroleum oil. It will not give you the protection you need for extended drain. M1 0w40 is one of the few true Group IV synthetic in the Mobil line.

That's what a lot of highly reputable independent MB shops and even the dealer is using in my area. It's hard to find retail...seems like only indys and dealer has it. The indy I frequently use says it is factory fill as of late.
I currently have Amsoil 5w40 in my CLK and Mobil 1 5w40 Turbodiesel in my SD. I will be using the M1 5w40 ESP next change.
