I've been reading around and I've read that the standard MB oil change is sticking an oil pump in through the dip stick hole and draining it that way. Is it recommended to do it that way?

The dealer uses the pump, stick in in the dip stick hole and SUCK IT OUT , not draining out like you said. that way they can get all the old oil out as much as possible. YES, IT IS RECOMMENDED !! by my friend, whom got Master certified by MB.

Yep. I guess you can get more oil out that way than by the usual drain plug method. I never went out and bought a vacuum pump system, so I've always done mine the old fashion way. A lot of people on here prefer the a top-sider since, besides getting more oil out, it is a whole lot easier and less messy than going under the car and draining it from the oil plug. I figure I gotta go under their to get to the filter anyways (which is a bulk of the mess). One of these days I'll go out and get a topsider. I hear you can pick them up from the marine supply shops.

The filter is located on top of the engine as well.

I switched from a Top-Sider to an Electric Drill Pump Kit made by JABSCO.

Canging the oil and filter is now very fast and easy.

One warning however, the filter element must be properly seated onto the spindle.

Yeah after I typed it I realized I was on the Mercedes forum, my only car that I don't have to get under the car to get to the filter. Definitely makes sense for the Mercedes.

A topsider also makes it so you don't have to replace the copper crush washer of the drain plug.

+1 make sure the filter element is seated properly, and the O rings are lubed with fresh oil. I still run the engine with the hood open after an oil change every time to make sure that it is completely sealed.

Side Note

The oil pump that I have only has a capacity of 7 quarts so you also may have to extract then dump and extract again. FWIW
