CLK230 Engine issues
Hi,
I have a 2000 CLK230 which I bought second hand, I have been servicing it regularly however my garage tell me that the previous owner must have missed oil changes as there is significant carbon and general sludge build up in the engine. I have replaced the timing chain, air maas meter etc and the car is now running fine however the garage tell me that it may give trouble again and the real solution is a new engine.
Any suggestions out there?

timming belt??????? Mercedes uses chains, not belt, you may wanna double check that.
Try upper chamber clean, it may help push the sludge out.

If a shop told me I needed a new engine because they said the engine had carbon build up, and sludge, and they somehow knew oil changes had been skipped, I'd start with a second opinion. I have a feeling that second opinion will lead to a new shop.

Base on what you said about the engine, this is how your engine looked like: don't be scared, this pix was taken from a BMW 330i engine with couple oil change skips, the owner ended up bought a new block.

CLK230? You're outside of North America.
Do a froum search.
Pre 2001, MB had problems with sludge due to not properly advising owners and dealers of the type of oil to use on the extended mileage FSR.
Class action filed and they covered damage under an extended warranty.
