Do make sure to replace both sides (cables).

In response to your questions concerning CLK top operation, there are two cables attached to the convertible top header plate and running towards the cross bar forward of the rear window. Mercedes refers to these cables as shocks ( part #A2087701865). The cables are attached at front of top. To access, remove the vinyl panel inside of the header panel. First, remove the three millimeter internal hex that attaches the top handle. Then, remove two screws at each end of vinyl panel. Once the panel is removed, you can remove the forward end of the cable with a ten mm socket. The rear of the cable where the break has occurred has a push in plastic retainer that must be pushed rearward through the black metal crossbar. Once removed, the retainer will split in the middle allowing the new cable to be fitted within. Note: The cable must be routed through the crossbar prior to being fitted inside the retainer.

Hope this helps

I know this thread is a little old but I have the same problem with my top and was wondering if one of these cables breaking would have any connection to the top to stop operating? My top will not go down any more but the headrests in the rear are operational.

Hi - don't know if it helps, but when my roof stopped working, it was as simple as the metal roof cover (horizontal part that hinges up to stow roof away) not being latched. Gave it a bit of a tap with hand, it latched down and everything back to normal! The controller looks for several things to be in place - i.e. trunk is closed, roof cover in boot in place etc.. before the opening or closing sequence can begin. If one (or more!) isn't in place, the button blinks at you and it won't work. At least if your headrests work, it isn't the hydraulics. Hope this helps. Cheers

Cable instructions ok but how to put back the top handle

Hi, I had the same problem and yes it was the two cables that
snapped off the rear (the middle cross bar just behind the rear window).

I removed the front vinyl to expose so I could put them back
in place (using the plastic retainer as instructed)

But now I cannot reinstall the top handle at the front.
If I install the vinyl/plastic cover first then I cannot turn
the handle in position to insert and screw in the handle
(and it needs to turn because the plastic is not letting it
in at its straight position).

So I am trying push it up so that it turns enough to insert
the screw bar but it cannot be done. Is there some trick
to make this easier?

If you have tried it hopefully you understand what i am talking about...

thanks for help!

Here's a great step-by-step with pics:
http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/sh...ad.php?t=86053

I found the best prices on the cables (or shocks) here:
http://www.trademotion.com/parts/ind...icleid=1419667
(Don't worry about the description of "Folding Top". It is the right part.
