CLK320 Intake

I want to thank Richard for lending us his car today for an intake fitment. It eliminates the stock air box and routes the Air Filter outside the engine compartment.

Piping is 3" Aluminum and connects to the MAF.

Engine response is increased as well as the sucking sound.

Pics below. Sorry for the quality I'm useless with a camera.

Right behind the bumper, if you remove the Airbox you'll see a big hole, its in there.

I did the same thing with some generic parts but after a while it was too loud and didn't really do anything for the car. But it sounded nice.
Your design looks cool.

The air box pops right out, no tools needed.

I love the sound, I cant say whether I gained much, the test ride was short but the throttle felt good. I also got my ECU flashed so my time with the intake alone was short lived.

I'll write up TVT's ECU tune once the weather clears and i get a real chance to play around. I also have some dyno runs planned in 2 weeks with them.

This is not a great video, I never meant it to be put up. I don't think it'll help much since I also have an exhaust. Still, it sounds good.

Is there interest in putting together a kit for the CLK320/430? We'll have a dyno of the results on the 320 in a few weeks and if a 430 would lend us their car and wants to purchase the parts we can get that dyno as well.

My car is a CLK 320 with K&N in box Filter.

That is probably as good as your going to get performance wise from your air intake.

If you don't have the later style factory airbox with the snorkle that goes down into the bumper area, then it would be worthwile to upgrade to the newer airbox design.

The bumper snorkle is shown in this picture as the extension off the bottom of the main raidiator intake (picture is not of a CLK airbox)

I'm gonna have to say a 3" pipe with a large cone filter in the lower bumper area is going to much more efficient then an air box, less turbulence and a smoother path.

If you're gonna purchase another air box, get your self some piping and fab up an intake.

Highly unlikely it will net any improvement. I dyno'd several intakes, including a cone filter with pipe, it netted 1 or 2 hp over stock.

Well if you're gonna spend the money on buying a new box, why wuoldn't you want to use the money for the extra HP? Just makes sense to me.

Sure, thats a valid statement. Guess it comes down to whether or not he already has the newer style stock intake, if that thats the case, nothing really to buy, except for maybe a K&N panel filter.

If I remember correctly, a new CLK320 airbox assembly (with filter) was around $120. How much is your intake?

1-2 hp plus the nice sound/look is worth it I feel.

Also the 1-2 hp gain was max hp right? was that consistent throughout the rpms. My last car only gained 4 max hp from my CAI but it gain nearly 12 in the mid range, just a thought.

Either way I'm happy with the mod, and appreciate the input

I guess we can do $119.00 to stay competitive. Now there's no excuse to stay with a box.

I don't remember the exact details, as the dyno tests with different air intakes wasn't my priority, as I was tuning a Unichip piggy back ecu at the time. When everything was static, I swapped some intakes around and did some pulls, the 1-2 hp was somewhere around the mid range and ran up to redline, so it was fairly constant but did vary a little bit.

This was on a dynojet with a large squirrel fan blowing directly into the front intake to simulate real world driving as much as possible. Also, my aftermarket intake wasn't quite the same as yours, mine was situated inside the engine bay with a solid heat shield to block out the hot under hood air. I did lower the hood for these tests, keeping the squirrel fan blowing into the radiator opening that fed the compartment where the air filter was located.

I did notice a 5-7 hp increase when using the C36 lower airbox vs. using the stock CLK320 lower airbox. I attribute that to the larger raidiator pipeing and the larger intake that draws from the lower bumper area, hence why I did a Frankenstein and kept the upper CLK320 box and the lower portion of the C36 airbox.

Of course, my CLK320 is supercharged, so the exact same tests on a NA CLK320 could have totally different results. Same holds true due to engine temps, outside temps and elevation.

This is the pipeing I am referring to that goes into the radiator opening

True, I think you should put a few kits together and sell them on Ebay. I know several people selling crappy W124 kits, made from cheap parts and they seem to get a lot of sales via Ebay. Given that, a quality made product like yours should do even better

Not into the ebay thing, I'll stick to my store. Thanks for the input.

Great design

Unfortunately... VIPCLK320 and I took the intake setup a step further. We've tried that setup and our current setup produces more power and picks up speed like crazy. The reason i say this is because... though i already have engine mods, my car picks up from 80mph to 100mph really quick. it's amazing, i was surprised.

Here's the prototype on my car. Absolutely pure flow from front to end. (notice that our piping is all the way through the back of the engine, it doesn't stop at the MAF)

VIPCLK320 is a genius. Everything was custom fabricated and measured thoroughly.
