Question Rattling noise coming from exhaust

I need some help....I have a loud rattling noise coming from the middle area of the underside of my car (around the bends of the exhaust) It happens when I rev my car in neutral as well as at speeds...What could this be? YOur help would be much appreciated.

This is surprisingly a common problem that Mercedes still hasn't made efforts to resolve. The catalytic converter comes apart internally, the broken pieces inside are what you hear rattling around.

mbtech is great. It's nice to have someone on these boards that has the inside word.

I had this problem too a while back. I took it to the dealer and it was fixed in no time.

it is a weird noise, it happens only when the car has warmed up, under 2k rpms, and on and off throttle. I checked out were the sound was coming from and it sounds like alot farther up the line then the cat, but I could be wrong....it sounds like a large rock inside the exhaust...only and example of course.
Thanks

The car has 4 catylatic converters. They are all located within about 2 ft of the engine. You are probably looking at the resonator, which lies between the cats and muffler.

Unfortunately my car just went off of warranty a couple thousand miles ago. Can you tell me approximately how much it would cost to fix this problem? Should I have the dealer do it or a muffler shop?
thanks,
