Well it sounds like your are not that used to doing work on the car yourslf, but at least you are attempting it !. You are right to drain the oil as too much oil can damage the engine due to the ecxess pressure. The good news for you is that you will not need any expensive tools to remove some of the oil.
The normal method is to remove the oil by undoing the sump drain plug underneath the engine. If you have a socket or spanner make sure it is the correct size to avoid damaging the nut and undo, making sure you have a tray or something underneath the hole for the oil to drain into. Dont worry if you drain too much as you can always pour some back in the top.
The other method is to use a syphen which can be placed into the dip-stick tube enabling you to drain the oil from the top of the engine.

If you do take it to a garage to get them to do it, it should only take them 10mins so dont get overcharged for what is a very simple job ! Good luck

You didnt say how much you over filled or why u put oil in. Were you low on oil and due for a change? Depending on how much you over filled, I would correct BEFORE driving. When you over fill enough to reach the crankshaft, the oil will turn to a milkshake when running the engine. The crankshaft will aerate the oil to the point where it no longer lubricates. If not corrected it's bye bye motor time! I.E. overfill is WAY worse than low oil.

I use a topsider. If you had one, you could simply vacuum out however much oil you're over. Topsiders are less than $50, and it will pay for itself in future oil changes. An oil change is easy. However, if you dont know what you're doing, paying someone is A LOT less expensive in the long run. My local dealer, Mercedes Benz of Valencia, charges between $70 and $100 for an oil change when it's on sale. The regular rate is $125. Considering an oil change is $70 in parts, it's not a bad deal for those who can't do it themselves.

When I overfilled I just stopped at the nearest oil change place tossed the guy a 20 to take the extra half quart out. It took 5 mins and the guy was glad to do it. He had a tool to suck it out from the top.

i got a oil change everything iscool. have not drivin that far. question is when i do the check through the steering wheel when the car is off. it still says reduce oil level. when i check the dipstick the level is fine. but there is no alert that pops up anymore on the dash while driving. maybe i messed up the sensor from to much oil. has that happened to others?

Ive had that dash sensor give various readings. It's a nice convenience but still go with the underhood check when your at the pumps to be safe.

Maybe there's still too much oil. Where does the oil come up to on the dipstick?

If the dipstick reads good, and the dash says otherwise, the oil level sensor may be bad. This is assuming you're checking both at the same time. If the dipstick reads full when cold, and the dash reads overfull only when hot, it may be because 8+ quarts of oil expands a lot when hot. In that case, the car is overfull.
