A lesson learned the hard way.....

So I went to the filling station to have the 208's emmissions tested. My Birthday is Saturday and so it's time to pay the man for my 2010 sticker.

In line for my inspection......WTF my check engine light starts glowing. They tell me I have to take her in and get checked out. Damn...so b/c I have only a few days b4 i'm driving illegal with old tags I go to the stealership for diognostic thinking its cool....it'll be a couple hundred for 02 sensor or something......

NOPE! It's the damn MAF. I agreed to the $717 work (diag., part, labor & tax) before i took aminute to think about it.

I could have just paid for the $125 diagnostic, ordered the OEM part online for half the price, and installed it in 15 min for free rather than pay for 2 hours of labor!

Damn.....next time I'll slow down and think it through before I drop $700 on a repair that should have cost me half that at most!

Only good news is that the new senor has breathed a ton of new life into the car. I really didn't notice just how sluggish she was. Always had go off the line and decent power but I definately feel the difference!

Learn one from me....If your Mass Air meter goes and the light starts to glow; Find a cheap place to give you the code to be sure, buy the meter at Parts.com and spend 15 min installing it yourself.

I knew better and learned again....the hard way.

I usually go to Autozone to have the code read for free and then I do the repair myself. Glad you got her fixed though.

Made that mistake plenty of times your not alone. I will heed your advice on the MAF. At 75k on the ODO, i think its time for a change. Recently my 02 sensor went off. I guess I will knock them both off the to do list.

A lot of times all you need to do is clean out the MAF with electronics cleaner. I fixed mine on my old BMW and now she runs like a champ

Its worthwile to invest in your own ODBII code reader, which will allow you to not only read the codes but clear them as well. As for the MAF, for a little over $100, you can get a new Bosch insert, no need to purchase a whole new MAF.
