Replacing Instrument Cluster
I have a 2002 CLK430, i have a problem with my the temperature side of it doesn't show up at all, and the clock and D...P thing works but sometimes it blinks, sometimes its not on at all and sometimes the pixels are dead. I think it depends on the weather and how much it heats up, the middle part works perfectly fine. Mercedes delarshop wants like 700 plus hands to replace the entire instrument cluster. I know that i can send it in to be raplaced but i was wondering can i buy a used one from lets say a salvaged car that i know it works and replace mine with that one. Will it work will the miles and everything else show up or does it have to be set up by Mercedes dealreshop. Please give me sugestions too.

$700 for an instrument cluster is a fantastic deal. List price for an 00-02 non-AMG instrument cluster is $1490. Even with the discount it’s $1192.
I suggest you send yours out to be repaired. Last I heard, BBA was charging $250 to rebuild one. Prices may have gone up. This is what usually happens, there are two flexible printed circuits that go from the board to the left and right LCDs. The middle display doesn’t use a printed circuit. Old age and vibration typically cause pieces of the flexible printed circuit to break. When that happens, the pixels stop displaying. So yes, you're going to pay $250 for $1 worth of printed board and a lot of know how - kind of like paying a programmer. We just happen to know exactly what to type in.
Potomac German Auto, Silver Star, and Sunvalley are all MB recycling yards, but I doubt they’re going to guarantee the flexible printed circuit on their used instrument cluster will work like new. You could try the redo-the-foam trick. The foam holds the printed circuit in place. There's a thread on it.
If you still set on trying to swap one, you may wan to do a search. It I seem to remember it not going so well for some people.
