Key wont turn in the ignition..No ZIP noise

I already have:

1. Replaced the battery
2. Bought a new key

Still:

There is no zip noise when i insert the key. It tells me to "please remove key" while it beeps at me.

Anyone have any ideas?

When I insert the key into the ignition a red light comes on the key but does not go away? The please remove key message only shows up when i open the door. I can unlock the door and all the normal stuff..

There is a module in our cars that controls the unlocking of the steering wheel. If that module goes out then it will not unlock the steering wheel (zip sound). I know that the module only accepts up to 5 keys programmed to it so hopefully that limit has not been reached. The only other issue could be that the module went bad.

Try doing a search for Key module and hopefully that will pull up some info.

When you say that you bought a "new" key, was it from the dealership or ebay? The keys on ebay have to be reprogrammed by mercedes.

Glad that you found the problem and even better that it wasn't a really expensive fix and you now have the chrome key that I want at that.

A few years back, I bought the new chrome key programmed for $120 shipped. Never had any problems with it until 7-8 months ago when it wouldn't "zip" with my ignition to unlock the steering wheel. I got worried, but decided to use my old key and it worked, but unfortunately, my old key is ripped on the "lock" button, so I have to use my chrome key to lock the car and my old key to unlock and start the car.

Is there anyway to get this fixed so my chrome key works? Or do I have to buy a new key?

Thanks in advance!

I hate to say it, but did you try replacing the batteries?

I went to the dealer to have the batteries checked and they were perfectly fine. The chrome key is only like 2 years old, while my old key is almost 10 years old (and I've had the car for 5 years and never had to replace the battery). The chrome key unlocks/locks the car and also opens the trunk so it doesn't seem like it would be the batteries?

It only takes a sec, I just thought it would be worth a try. There are 2 CR2025 batteries in the key that you could replace at any Wal-Mart. Just pull the metal key out and then use it to move the little gray catch on the inside over. Pull out battery sleeve...

Not sure how it can happen, but it sounds like the Infrared Transmitter on your chrome key has stopped working, while the Radio Frequency transmitter on the chrome key continues to work. The Radio Frequency transmitter on the chrome key is used to open and close the central locking system of the car, while the Infrared transmitter is used to unlock the steering wheel lock and start the car.

Is there any way to fix the infrared transmitter? Or do I have to buy a new key?

Yeah I know, at the MB Dealer we replaced the batteries to see if that would solve the problem, but it didn't.

sorry to say but have you dropped your key because thats what happened to me after i dropped it too many times.i found out it was my key after i took it apart and found a piece of plastic twisted with copper wire broken off at the tip next to the infrared transmitters.so i figure i buy a new key and its fixed and it was.i tried fixing the other key but i haven't had time besides im happy with the new one to where i don't want to fix the old one.

If the transmitter is broken on the key then you would need a new key. There is one other possibility. It is possible that the Electronic steering wheel lock (ESL) and/or Electronic Ignition system (EIS) has lost the programing for the chrome key. In that case then the dealer should be able to reprogram those two modules for you.

I hope it's that one other possibility. I will have to go to the dealer to try to get it reprogrammed. Thank you for your help!
