Angry CLK Transmission Bump and Grind

So I get to my exit today on my way to work and am sitting in line to turn left. When It's time to go, I press the accelerator and almost nothing happened. I press it again and my car jerks forward. So I do this a few times and manage to drive it about 500ft down the road to a parking lot. I only went into 2nd or 3rd when doing this, but the whole time it was jerking around and making this HORRENDOUS grinding sound. Even in Park or Neutral I can here stuff clanking around in there - but it drives.

I got it towed to a transmission shop this morning but haven't heard yet. I figure I will need a new transmission. Sucks because I just dropped $400+ on motor mounts and suspension parts that I was going to put in this weekend.

Any thoughts MBWorld?

99 CLK320 w/ 116,000mi, no history or signs of trans. problems

NEVER. I've read yes and no to this maintenance. To be honest, I was planning on having the diff and tranny fluids flushed next month.

Do you have any further information from the transmission shop? My car is doing the exact same thing.

Yes, she's back on the road now after a hefty bill. I had to have the entire transmission rebuilt for $2500. What I was told was that the torque converter blew out and took a gear train with it. I asked how this could have been avoided and if changing the transmission fluid in 30,000mi increments would have helped. The answer was "nothing" I could have done would have prevented this. If your car can drive then it probably isn't this bad. Is your problem identical?

Its the exact same thing and even the same year except its a CLK430. I was pretty sure that it wasnt the transmission but something in the torqe converter. You cant really drive it but you you can get it in and out of the driveway on occassion. Sometimes it works, sometimes it dosent, sometimes it makes a horrific grinding sound, sometimes it dosent. Like yours you can really hear it in park or neutral. Did you have a chain transmission shop perform the work or was it a local independent shop?

I had a local shop do it - these guys. http://www.northeasttransmissionco.com/

I did a lot of calling around and research. One thing I found was that it's almost impossible to find a replacement trans for these cars. Every year, every model, and even different parts of the year, the factory will have different configurations in the TCM (transmission control module). You can't reprogram one so it has to be an exact match....basically a CLK430 that came off the line around the same time yours did.

A basic trans overhaul/rebuild takes care of everything. Like I said, I had mine done for $2500, warrantied for 12,000/1year.

Thanks for the information. I currently have the car for sale as is but I may decide to keep it now and invest the $2500 into it since its not going to cost as much as I originally thought....hopefully.

Yeah, I have had quotes from $3500 to $4500 for a complete rebuild. Not sure if it still needs a complete rebuild or if I can get away with a cheaper rebuild sincce it sounds like its the torque converter and not necessarily the trans.
