Need Info on Momentary Transmission Slipping Problem

My 04 CLK 320 has developed a problem. When I first drive the car in the morning, it starts and runs just fine. It continues to function just fine when I start driving the car down the road. However, after I accelerate from a stop sign during the first five miles or so the transmission seems to slip momentarily somewhere between the mid-range gears. It only lasts a second or so, and it usually repeats a few seconds later, but then it continues on down the road just fine. This problem disappears after I get onto the freeway during my 22 mile trek to work. The same sequesce of events occurs in the evening when I first start driving the car home.
My mechanic has run a diagnostic test on the car and has only come up with a pilot bearing recall notice on the model and year vehicle, but it does not include my VIN number. I fail to see the connection between that issue and this performance problem. This seems more like an internal transmission slippage or shifting control problem to me.
Has anyone else experienced this problem or do you have any ideas on what the problem may be???
Thanks for your time!!
Bob

Maybe you should find a new mechanic! ![Wink](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
Seriously, all jokes aside, you should seek a second opinion. And have the mechanic experience the "slip" that you're concerned about. It may be that you are interpreting incorrectly what you are experiencing. I've done that myself a number of times and have always spent too much time and money attempting to diagnose something that was never a problem.

What do you mean by "slip". Most cars, in the first few miles of driving, deliberately delay shifting in order to quickly heat up the emissions systems. So when it seems like the car should shift, the revs keep rising higher than "normal", but eventually the shift happens...and once the car warms up it should start shifting like "normal"... is this what you are experiencing?

Hey Guys I'm having a similar problem in my 99' 320. At first it would "slip" every so often, now it seems like it's happening more frequently. When I say slip I mean acceleration is lost and the RPM's spike, like it momentarily went into neutral. It only happens for a split second then continues on like the OP said.
Any input?

I have problem like that at wot. getting on the freeway there is a huge lag between shifts if i am in the gas. The car doesnt go faster till it hits the gear and then it is normal

My transmission started to slip on me, and it scared the **** out of me! It also down shifted really rough, and I took it in and luckily I just had tranny fluid in the valve body on the transmission, Im not sure if it was exactly the valve body, but one of my sensors on the tranny had a substantial amount of fluid on it causing it to send the wrong signals, there for rough down shifts and the "slipping" described. Could be a possibility for you.
