Big Grill revisited

OK, bear with me guys. This is my first post. I have been following various threads on the star in grill issue for the past few weeks and have a question that may have been previously addressed.

Has anyone ever considered simply taking one of the CL sports grilles or other "huge star" grill and cut it to size to fit the CLK grill. I saw the "schatz" grill and the "expression CL grill" and would of course like the expression CL grill, but not for 2 grand.

Thanks in advance. I think this is a cool site.

The Expression CL grill is a CL grill cut to fit the CL (CLK) hood. You can not cut it to fit the CLK hood due to the different angles and curves. If you were to see my hood in person, the differences are noticable.

There may be an alternate CL-type grill available

I agree with you that I do not care to the Sharz (or whatever) "Big Star" style grill is not really what I'm interested in and that the hood-grill combo is far too pricey... I may have discovered an alternate CL-style grill (Only) on the following site...http://www.mh-dezent.de/frames/index.htm. Go to the CLK section and look for the pictures of the S1. They also has a rear spoiler I'm rather interested in. However, I do not read german and english emails to them have not been replied too. Let me know if you have better luck.

ndabunka,

I see you are from Charlotte. Have we talked before, as I also live in Charlotte when I am not away at college. What part of town do you live in? Im on the south side of town, right off Providence road. I believe we have talked before, but I cannot recall for certain.

The S1 on the web site is a hood and grill combo

The description on the web site for the S1 states "Bislang ein Novum auf dem Markt ist die Motorhaube im Look des CL Coupé" which essentially says it is the hood with the look of a CL. I'm not an expert but I think its saying that it is a hood and grill combo. It sure looks nice and I wish I could get that look for my W208 but I don't believe there is any getting around changing the hood and grill.

new star grill

OK, I decided to get the Schatz grill and flat hood conversion. Only took about fifteen minutes. I've been driving around with it a few days and have gotten a few compliments.

Also, when I really thought about it, and i think someone wrote this in another thread, most people won't notice the difference between the schatz and cl grill unless they really know mercedes.

Just thought I would post this for whoever may be considering a star in grill conversion.

Looks clean - I am thinking about replacing mine with the Schatz grill too. I think its an all around better look, especially after seeing yours. where did you wind up getting the grill and the hood conversion ? Online?
Thanks!

schatz grill

I ended up buying the grill and hood emblem from performance products.com They had a fifteen percent off deal going so I got both for under $300. It was very easy to replace the grill (about five or six screws) and the hood emblem was pretty simple as well. someone on one of the other threads lists how to simply twist the original star from underneath and the star comes right out. then, simply assemble the emblem, drop it into the hole, and catch the washer on the hood housing. All in all, about fifteen minutes.
