how much resistance on new steering damper?

just received a new steering damper. what kind of resistance should it have? I can push and pull the damper easily. is this normal?

If you got arms like WiLL or Big Mike, you may break a new one by accident.

For the rest of us, when compared to a used one, a new one is quite a bit stiffer - but I wouldn't say it's hard to compress. Just harder than an old one.

Or if it was as shot as mine you can hold it by one end, and shake it to and fro. Definitely the most cost effective fix on this car. Now I just need to get my ball joints replaced.
