Resonator removal only?

So I was thinking of just replacing the muffler on my 320 with a Magnaflow. When I mentioned this to a buddy at work who knows a lot about Benz's, he suggested just removing the resonator. He says it'll be throatier.

I just want to be able to hear SOMETHING at idle and acceleration. Does anyone have sound clips of just a resonator removed? Any advice is welcomed.

Thanks!

it will sound a bit throatier. but not a lot. depends how much you want to change and how loud you want it. i suggest taking the res off, seeing how you like the sound, and the go from there. its all preference.

another thing: videos on youtube doesnt always correctly represent the actual exhaust note. so it you just have to play it by ear and see what you like. but youtube will give you an idea of how much you really want out of it

I just want to be able to hear some kind of exhaust note. Like I said I was initially thinking of leaving everything intact and just replacing the muffler with a Magnaflow. I would love to hear one in person.

What you need is to delete the res and the secondary cats.trust me you won't regret it.just deleting the res only gives you the noise your looking for once step on it around 3000rpm.if you delete the secondary cats even when starting the car you will get the sound you crave.

That sounds like a good idea. With me being in SoCal, I wonder if I'll have a tough time convincing a shop to remove the secondary cats.

You need to cut off the resonator and weld a straight pipe in its place.

Just go to a shop that caters to tweakers and meth heads. They'll be happy to take the cats off your hands so they can sell them at the local scrap yard. And you'll be saving the next guy from having his cats stolen from his driveway with a hacksaw in the middle of the night.

lol,i know what hes trying to say.what he meant was take to a shop that doesnt over price or how i would say a (ghetto shop)nothing name brand.places like that will do it cheap if you let them keep your cats cuz they know where to the metal to scrap and make extra money.about saving the next guy money, people trying to make extra money go around cutting peoples cats off to scrap.

99CLK320,
FWIW: I have read on the w208 forum that if you live in CA you will not pass emissions testing if you remove the secondary cats. I'm just sayin'.......

Now I don't care who you are, that's funny. And bless the Pigmies in New Guinea cuz that is the only human being that could fit under your car in your driveway with a hack saw in the middle of the night

There's no such thing as a fat tweaker, silly - that's why they're so rare. Their teeth have rotted out and they have trouble eating. That's what gets 'em skinny enough to fit so well underneath your car. That, and they've usually been up for four days straight.

Sorry for the hijack. We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread.

Just did mine yesterday, as others mentioned. It's not a very dramatic difference, I watched all the youtube videos out there, but nothing really describes the note it has now.

Grumble is slightly more prominent above 3k RPMs, but there's not very much change. I found a shop to do it very cheap for me locally. My first quote was 200$, I walked away. Next shop said 80$, I got him down to 40$, kept the resonator, and watched very closely as it was being installed and removed. Took about 15 minutes for the guy, and I even checked the welds out myself.

To be honest, it's just not enough. The guy said he'd remove my secondary cats, but I declined as I know I have a CA test-only smog check due this year.

It looks like I'm in the market for a nice cat-back system at this point.

I have a w208 230k
i have removed the CAT only
so now the exhaust is a collector on the engine connected by pipes to the res and to the muffler
i have an amazing roar especially when the kompressor engages
when idling it stills the same as before
so on road they just see a classic car driving but when power is needed you can unleash the beast that rides under the hood
and you can simply reinstall the cat when the car should be checked

Yes, removing the resonator will make just make it sound a little more throatier. If you want to be a little more noticed get the magnaflow. It's all preference, just see what you like man. Good luck

I have a 430 with the 55 exhaust.

I have a secondary cat delete and recently did a resonator delete... The sound now is probably what you are searching for and some!! ))

The drone after the resonator delete is kind of annoying but there's a price for everything.

I just had my car smogged... Went to 3 shops and each time I brought up the fact I didn't have secondaries- they said you will FAIL. Emission wise it will pass however visually they fail you automatically. At the 4th shop I didnt open my mouth... I passed no problem!!!

Cost to remove resonator was under $100. I'm in So Cal as well and have a good shop if you need. Just PM me.

I can also send you a video of how mine sounds.
