CD changer upgrade

Does anyone know if it's possible to replace the factory-installed cd changer with a unit that will read CD-RWs? I can play CD-Rs fine, but the CD-RWs don't work (although they do work in the in-dash single-cd in my Z4).

Correct me if I'm wrong guys....but I think the CLK cd player is connected via fiber optic wiring(obviously not normal wiring) meaninf you can't swap it out unless you replace the whole deck/head unit. Try doing a search to see if anyone has posted about this before.

Yes, this is true, you would have to replace the entire changer. I was hoping the newer alpine units, perhaps those in the 2003 model, would be compatible, and that they would supprort CD-RW.

Mine is a 2000 with COMAND. I was hoping I could just purchase a new changer and install that instead.

I do not think it is possible to use an aftermarket CD Changer with an OEM Mercedes Headunit. I could be wrong, but any sound system equipped with the fiber optic deal will not work unless you swap the whole deal out.

There are at least two aftermarket CD changers I know of that work with the 1999+ Mercedes head units:

USA Spec
Becker

There also are a few that work with the non-fibre optic units, but the most popular is certainly the whatever's-current Alpine M-Bus changer.

I can't remember for sure, but I think the latest W203 changer may read CD-RWs. I'm fuzzy on this one though, but if it does, you can just hook it up in place of your old one.

Thanks for the heads up

I did not know that there were other CD changers that could work with 1999+ MBZ Bose systems. Thanks for the info!
