where's it coming from?

if it's a squealing sound coming from the dash area it's probably the serp belt slipping or one of the drive pulleys is dying.

if it's a whining sound coming from the tranny...that can't be good. when was the last time you flushed the tranny and torque converter?

The serpentine belt is the main belt. It is at the front of the engine, and turns several pulleys that provide power to several components under the hood--power steering; alternator; etc. There are also "idler" pulleys that do not provide power to anything, but they are necessary for guiding the belt.

You need to determine if any of the pulleys are making a whining noise. If the idler pulleys are making a noise, then these are the least expensive to repair. These pulleys have sealed bearings, and when the bearings fail, they make a whining noise. You can use a stethoscope to try to isolate the noise. You can also use a long wooden dowel to transfer vibration and noise to your ear. Be careful, because if the dowel touches a spinning pulley, then the dowel will be pushed into your brain, and that will make things very difficult for a long, long, time.

In short, try to determine if the whining noise is coming from a pulley. A whining noise usually comes from a spinning or rotating part.

Best of luck.

The whining could also be coming from the differential ( or Rear End ). When trying to hear where a noise is coming from I've gone into a big empty parking lot and rolled the windows down, opened the hood to the safetly latch, and drive it around up to like 20 mph. If you do this it should give you a good indication on where the noise is coming from.
