you notify your insurance company? How do they know that you've added a
Kleeman supercharger or 19" Carlsson wheels, for example? When you get into
wreak, if your insurance doesn't know about your mods will they replace them? If
you tell them about your mods before hand do they charge you more?

Just as if a passenger or item in your car were injured/damaged in an accident, your insurance company (providing you car is covered for more than liablity) would cover aftermarket products. It doesn't matter whether they are installed or in a box. This is why it's important to keep a receipt of your purchases. Not all products are easy to prove that you have (ECU tuning, cams, etc).

The car was capable of 80 mph in the frst place- having a Kompressor doesnt make it any more of a lethal weapon than before. The operator makes the car wreckless, not the car itself.
Liabilty insurance on automobiles is based almost entirely on the driver not the car, comprehensive premiums are dirived from the value/cost of the vehicle and repair costs.
In your scenario I would hope that the courts would see the fact that the drivers judgement had everthing to do with the outcome and not anything to do with vehicle. You can kill someone going 80 mph in your Subaru just as easily as in your MBZ.
If you document additions/modifcations to your car with your insurance carrier there will be no problem covering replacement costs. Premiums may increase as their liability increases- only seems fair really.
