How do we know if the voltage regulator is bad?

I just removed my alternator after receiving the battery charge in red today and the car died on the freeway and I had to be towed home. My voltage regulator looks worn down, but my brushes are still touching the center piece of the alternator, should I still replace or just have the alternator checked at autozone first. hoping for a quick fix!

The regulator is a normal wear part, you're going to need one eventually anyway, and they costs $25, so that's the direction I'd go.

Thank you Marcus, Do you think Napa or Autozone type places will carry a bosch Voltage Regulator? I replaced the alternator about 100k ago, but who knows if they even replaced it? They could have replaced the VR and sent me on my way thinking I had a new alternator? Maybe I am over reacting.

No idea about those guys. However, if I ordered one tonight from autohausAZ (and they are currently closed), it would be at my front door on Tuesday with normal shipping. SD is probably the same.

I've never had one last 100K miles. For me its a lot less. Being a normal wear part, you may want to keep a spare. I do.
