I had my vehicle shipped cross country, and the shipper jumped it with a 24V system and blew up the electronics. I made them pay for it. The dealer installed a new OEM radio with a new code. As I recall, he told me the code is tied in with the VIN, and that I should always have my new code handy, because if I were to need it from the dealer in the future, there might be a problem getting the new code.

So, if OEM, but not original radio, might have problem.

Just a heads up.

Don't think it's a big deal to get the code if you are at the dealer with your car or you have done business with them before. I called my dealer, didnt purchase the car from them and he gave me the code over the phone.

I have however, purchased several parts from them and have had all 3 of our MB serviced there so it may be a good customer thing. They did ask me for the commands serial # which I just read since I had the unit in my hand at the time.

I don't think you understood me. Maybe I wasn't clear enough. I wasn't talking about the relationship with the dealer. I'm sure most dealers, if not all, would give one the radio code. I am saying the code is tied in with the VIN, such that when the car comes off the assembly line, the radio code is cross referenced with the VIN, and if later you get a replacement OEM radio, that the new radio will have a new code, that won't be cross referenced with the VIN, so that if you lose the code on the new radio, the new code might not be cross referenced with the VIN. That's why the dealer told me not to lose my code on the replacement OEM radio.

Righto, bur OEM doesn't mean the original radio to the car. Saying that, I think it is very unlikely that many would have had their radio replaced, as in my case, and that it is very likely that your radio was original to the car.

PS. See my other response for clarity re. radio code & VIN.

PPS. OEM is Original Equipment Manufacturer. For instance, you can replace your original spark plugs 10 times, each time with OEM plugs.
