Exhaust rattle

I have just developed a rattle in the exhaust system at about 2000-2500 RPM when decelerating. It seems to be coming from the middle of the exhaust system and only when the car is warm
Has anyone else experienced this?

I have the same problem. Mine happens at acceleration and decceleration. And it happens exactly as it passes 2000 rpms. I am going to try to take it to my mechanic next week since I don't have a warranty. Let me know if you find out what the problem is and I will do the same.

Have the Dealer Inspect the Cat Converters...
The Converters are Breaking Up and causing the Rattle...
I have Seen SEVERAL Do This...On The 208/210/220/163
Its Covered Under the Emission Warranty

Is an emission warranty still effective even if the warranty has expired on the car?

I have a 99 CLK430 without a warranty. I'm curious if emission problems are covered anyway.

Emission control devices carry a much longer warranty than the rest of the car. The cats are still covered on your car if that is the problem. My '00 CLK430 Cab had a similar problem that got worse over time. Every time the engine passed 1800 RPM, something would rattle underneath. I suspected the cats but the dealer found a loose heat shield. Problem solved under warranty.

one of my cats went out a short while ago... and the noise got very loud very fast.... i can't recall if the noise was only during low RPMs, but there was definitely a rattle from the underneath...

if the noise is not loud, it might not be the cat...

I've recently replaced both my cats under warranty. The noise was VERY loud, sounded like a screw was lose and keep knocking on metal. When my cats were fried, the ABS light came on along with another light but I can't remember what it was, but it sure scared the heck outa me.

Talking check the cat!

Had a similar problem a while back and it ended up to be my right cat. When the cat warms up it expands and that’s when the loose pieces start rattling. The dealer replaced it under warranty..

This seems like a common problem with the Clk’s

Good Luck..

WOw, so many people having the same problem. I thought I was the only one.

I initially thought it was the heat shield, but the mechanic couldnt find anything wrong there.

I was embarrassed to carry passengers in the car but I get so used to the rattling now I may miss it when it is gone.

How much to fix or change the cats anyway?

same here

wow, funny thing is, I noticed the rattle two days ago..didn't know what was it. I took it to my friend mechanic and he inspected the car, and said the cat converter needed to be replaced. Take it to the dealer he said, it's nothing serious. Appears the CLKs have some issues w/ these converters. Covered under the warranty. I am going in monday to get it fixed...

Went by the dealership today and found out that all Benz's have an Emmissions Warranty for 8 years or 80,000 miles. I made an appointment to have it checked on Tuesday, hopefully the problem will be covered under this warranty. Whatever this noise is I want it gone.

I'm embarassed to pick up speed on local roads in fear of my car sounding like a piece of junk.

I also bought a new gas cap in hopes of my Check Engine light going off completely. My light has been coming on an off ever since a month ago right after pumping gas. Hopefully my gas cap is shot and not closing right. If this doesn't work I guess they'll be able to tell me whats wrong with it on Tuesday.

you should be thankful it is gonna get repaired under warranty.. cause those cat convertors are quite expensive...

My brother runs his mitsubishi VRG without a cat.
My cousin who works for Volvo says it is OK if the oxygen sensor is before the cat, but if the sensor is after the cat, the engine will not run properly without a cat.
Does anyone know if the w208 sensor is before or after the cat?
My workshop manager said that a rattling cat should be changed because the cat's internals could break into small fragments that can get sucked back into the engine and that would do the engine no favor at all.

The workshop manager also said some S classes were getting their cats screwed up within the first year.
Wonder if this is just applicable to MB's.
I would probably get a high-flow after-market cat. Should be cheaper than original MB, and probably liberate a little more horses.

Well I took in today and after checking the car out the tech said that it was a heat shield rubbing against the left front cat. He said the cat wasn't bad but it had some rust from the rubbing so since it's covered under warranty he is going to replace it anyway. They didn't have the part in stock so I have to take it back tomorrow. He said that my check engine light could have been caused by that also. Hopefully tomorrows repair will help both the rattling noise and the check engine light.

Then I can go back to being a happy CLK owner.

Exhaust Rattle

I took the car to the dealer. The said they are going to replace the cat. Seems strange after only 25K miles.

You probably drive it hard, or it was just deffective.

I had the same deal with my car, dealer replaced under warranty precats and cats.

the day I had my suspension put in... is the day I started hearing rattles... could be coincedence...

I think it was either defective... or something got dragged under the car body and hit the cat.. causing it to break a little & rattle...
