new member question - key fob range

hey everyone - first post here but have been following the board for a while.

i bought a new CLK430 convertible a couple of months ago and was wondering if anyone has experienced problems with the keyless entry. it seems as though you basically have to be on top of the car to activate with the key fob - i have to be close enough to touch the car to unlock it. it has no range whatsoever. is it just me or do i have a faulty key?

the dealer says it's normal - of course.

thanks for any input

eh... i would say, not exactly touching distance... but around 5-10 feet is what you should expect...

i think its more of a safety feature (don't accidentally unlock when you walking away)...

Yeah, you should at least get a range of about 10 feet. Any closer and I think you may have a problem with your remote.

and it is almost sensitive in a retarded way cause it needs almost a direct line of sight... if anything is in the way (wall, car, etc...) the remote may not work.

It is a pretty weak remote in general, but there is almost no reason to need the remote to work 300 ft away like some aftermarket stuff....

it would be nice to not have to walk back to the car to check if car is locked, but... oh well

Used to be a CLK430
Try changing your batteries in the key fob, I believe they are CR2025.

Isn't the "keyless go" only on the W209 models?

Sorry about that, I thought my post might be confusing. I was referring to Calboy's CLK320. He has in his sig "keyless go" as one of his options. I was thinking your question was directed at him. sorry, it's way past my bedtime.

Oh, so I was on the right track with that. Cool, I thought I just lost another ounce of credibility with that post. Whew, good to know I haven't completely lost it.

the infared key usually works only 5-10 ft from the car on my sis's 00 320. If lucky, I can use it at longer distance. Sometime it doesn't even work when you are right next to the car.

I think it's a problem with all 208 CLK.

I can open my c32 using the infared from 60-70 ft away with ease.

I can point my key toward my car in the garage and lock or unlock it while standing in my house. The wall is concrete block.

I have noticed that the system is sensitive about where your are located with respect to the car when outside. Sometimes I have to change the angle of attack.
