Where to mount a Valentine 1?

Hello everyone again. I will probably order the Valentine 1 this week. Its been horrible here in Vancouver for the last week. There has been a death almost everyday last week as a result of young, inexperienced drivers overspeeding and racing. Just suddenly, starting 2 Saturdays ago, you see it in the news, another accident after another. Very weird. The major one was of a 18 year old girl who just got her driver's license the week prior to the accident. Happened around 2am I think....overspeeding, and couldn't negotiate the turn....unfortunately, she wrapped her new Honda Accord Coupe around a lamp post. Apparently her front right wheel was able to even touch her rear right wheel and her car was sliced in half! Yick...
So as a result of all these accidents, the cops here are on high alert. I think a radar would be useful around this time. I can't help drive abit on the speedy side with my CLK. But not that fast enough to kill myself of course...knock on wood.

Anyways, on a brighter note....just wondering where any on you mounted the V1 in your CLK's. I heard u can install it so u are running on wire. Not the sticky suckers?
If anyone could post some pictures please.

Thanks a bunch...and drive safe everyone!

Christy,

I don't know if this would work in a CLK, but I have my V1 hardwired into my E to the right of the rearview mirror. I use the suction cups to attach it to the windshield; the power wire runs from the receiver to the trim along the top of the windshield, then is hidden from there to the power wire.

The mirror obscures my view of the receiver, but that's OK because I have the Valentine remote display unit mounted along the bottom of my instrument cluster (to the right of the temperature display). That way, my eyes don't have to travel far to see the radar display, and people driving behind me can't see my radar detector light up.

Aren't radar detectors illegal in Canada?

If you mount it under the rear view mirror you can tap power from the light. This position will work well but the cops will see your detector light up if they are behind you.

You can mount it on the lower left dash and tap power from the fuse box on the left side of the dash. This position is almost invisible to the cops but is a little less sensitive.

Take a look at the Escort 8500 another good unit and quite a bit smaller than the V1.

With the V1's modular power cord where you tap power from is not so important -- you can run the flat cable as far as you want.

The V1 has a forward-facing antenna and a rear-facing antenna. Valentine highly recommends mounting the detector as high as possible with a straight "view" backward for the rear antenna. The problem of the cops seeing your detector light up can be avoided with the remote display unit.

Suprisingly, the Escort is not smaller than the V1:
Escort LXWXH (in.) 5.32 X 2.85 X 1.25
Valentine One 4.5 3.6 1

It is, however, quite a bit less expensive ($300US for the Escort; $430US for the V1 with remote display).

The Escort also won't tell you if that Ka-band signal you're picking up is coming from ahead of you or behind you. If you're a casual speeder who wants to slow down anytime radar is nearby, that's fine. If you were a (hypothetical) hardcore speeder, though, and wanted to know whether each signal was a threat or not, you might prefer the additional information the V1 would give you.

V1 Installation

Here is a picture of where I put my V1. It gets good reception, yet is not too easily seen from the outside. I had my dealer hard-wire it to the ignition. The wire is hidden and goes to the left across the top of the windshield and then down the pillar completely out of view.

Christy,

I'm not sure if Jim can, or will do this. But the following is where Jim has placed the concealed unit for my V1 in my M3. He basically hides the unit inside of the rear view mirror. I placed my actual unit in the 3rd brake light housing, and used a smaller bulb. You can get more information or contact jim through www.apexcone.com. Email me at flipbnrkor@imneverwrong.com if you have any more questions. Good luck, you'll love the radar detector.

I have heard of someone who customizes the stock mirror where they imbed the remote portion of the V1. Has anyone ever heard of this and if so where can you get information.

Ultrasmith performs that kind of integration. From what I've heard its expensive though.
