Smell identified.....

Ok- so last October I had a fair bit of work done on my CLK320 including new plugs....I noticed a burnt smell when the car was at normal operating temp and traced it to a drip of something- (probably oil) falling on the exhaust manifold (from the valve cover gasket?). (as you look at the engine, left hand side, top near the spark plug bits)
No oil level warning lamp has illuminated.
My questions are:

1. would the mechanics have caused this whilst changing the plugs?
2. is it an easy DIY job?
3. If it is a DIY job, are there any special tools required
4. How much does it normally cost for a garage to perform such a task (replace the gasket)?

Note that the car is around 120K miles so is this something that is normal anyhow?

Thanks.

2002 CLK430
1. It was caused by the gasket failing.
2. Depends on the owner. Many people could.
3. A torque wrench, but many just use a ratchet.
4. Depends on the shop.

Many CLK owners report failures earlier. Many never have a valve gasket failure.
