Diagnostic plugs

Can anyone tell me what the difference between the obd2 under the dash connection and the round 38 pin under the hood are in terms of the info it may supply on a 2002 clk430?

I think that it depends on your ob2 tool. As far as the pin connector under the hood, if you have the hardware and right software you can really dig into the brain of your car.

The OBD2 only reads basic codes, mostly emissions-related, when your check engine light comes on. You can also get some basic data from it. I use the Torque app on my phone along with a $12 bluetooth OBD2 reader to do this. The big connector under the hood is for the ultra special dealer computer that can dig far into the brain of the car. They can be bought, but very expensive.

I use CarSoft with the 38 pin port. Do a little search and you might be able to find one if that's what you're looking for.

Should be able to do it with a code reader.

This BAS/SRS code has been a pain in the *** for a couple years. I have replaced the Brake sensor multiple times and have even reset the steering wheel numerous times. Now, I think I have another clue as to what it may be. My cruise control works on and off so a user suggested it may be one of my wheel speed sensors. I am going to have it checked out when I return from Korea in 6 weeks. I am going to drive the car from San Antonio to Augusta, GA and will need the cruise control (speeding issues).

I was able to use Carsoft with the knock-off adapter box from Ebay to access some features on the 38 pin port, but found it very limited. I borrowed that setup from a friend. It does not do what the dealer system does. I mainly just used it to reset adaptations. I believe that setup might be able to re-program new modules to work together if they had to be replaced.

It can be very buggy.

I took a look under the seat and found that a yellow connector has two wires connected and one is frayed. Not sure exactly what that wire controls yet, I may have time to repair it after work today

I believe it goes to the sensor that is in the bottom seat cushion.
