Thumbs up shifting gears manually Good or Bad???

I would like to know if shifting the car manually is bad for the transmission and how does that system really work? Also down shifting a bad idea? Does the car learn and adapt to my driving style? Thanks in advance..

What year is your car? I believe they all come with the adaptive transmission. You can actually "re-learn" your car by shifting it "manually" if you want to call it that. It was designed for the tiptronic use.

If you have the newer MY'00 CLK with TouchShift, there is no problem shifting gears manually....

though the CLK should normally adjust to your driving needs under "D", if you require a little more juice for passing or whatnot, you can downshift as needed....

with the system be completed electronically controlled, you won't have to worry about shifting to too low of a gear accidentally while travelling at high speeds....

with pre MY'00, i don't think there are any systems to stop you from shifting to 1st or 2nd while going 50mph...

I got a 99, I use the shift gate 1 2 3 4 D all the time.

It doenst allow accidental downshifting, but does not switch gears until u switch it, meaningu can just bounce off the rev limiter all day.

Owning both a c230 coupe and clk500 with tiptronic, i dont like either, i feel the manual selector responds quicker, and allows u to ride it to the redline, tiptronic IMO has a large delay and only will let u go when it thinks u should.

Earlier models had gated shifters but they were still electric like the Touch Shift of the 2000 and up models. Some other manufacturers (maybe MB too) use a mechanical governor to control the shifting.

Manual shifting an automatic is not a problem. However, just like a manual transmission, autos have clutches that wear out too. Downshifting for brake assisitng will put more wear on the clutches. Does this mean you will need a trans rebuild in 50,000 miles? I seriously doubt it. We had a '78 450SLC and an '84 500SEC that I manually shifted for almost 200,000 trouble free miles each!

I agree with you on that. I too use the shift gate 1 2 3 4 D all the time. Its pretty sweet when getting in and out of exits in the highway. I don't do it all the time cause obviously like E55AMG99 said its just like a manual clutch where it wears down with lots of use, but when u feel a need to show off, man its sweet........well for what the car is.:p

I also have a CLK 430 (2002 Cabrio) with the Manu-matic "Touch shift" option on my 5 speed automatic transmission. I've been using it all of the time for over a year and a half and don't seem to have any problems. I've got 19,000 miles on the odometer.

It's great for gearing down on the highway off ramps and good for getting an entra step off of a light (I put it in 2nd or 3rd to get a good start from a traffic light).

Shift away!

By the way, has anyone had to replace one of these transmissions under warranty or out of pocket yet?
