shifting gears manually Good or Bad???

though the CLK should normally adjust to your driving needs under "D", if you require a little more juice for passing or whatnot, you can downshift as needed....
with the system be completed electronically controlled, you won't have to worry about shifting to too low of a gear accidentally while travelling at high speeds....
with pre MY'00, i don't think there are any systems to stop you from shifting to 1st or 2nd while going 50mph...
It doenst allow accidental downshifting, but does not switch gears until u switch it, meaningu can just bounce off the rev limiter all day.
Owning both a c230 coupe and clk500 with tiptronic, i dont like either, i feel the manual selector responds quicker, and allows u to ride it to the redline, tiptronic IMO has a large delay and only will let u go when it thinks u should.
If you have the newer MY'00 CLK with TouchShift, there is no problem shifting gears manually....

Manual shifting an automatic is not a problem. However, just like a manual transmission, autos have clutches that wear out too. Downshifting for brake assisitng will put more wear on the clutches. Does this mean you will need a trans rebuild in 50,000 miles? I seriously doubt it. We had a '78 450SLC and an '84 500SEC that I manually shifted for almost 200,000 trouble free miles each!
I got a 99, I use the shift gate 1 2 3 4 D all the time.

It's great for gearing down on the highway off ramps and good for getting an entra step off of a light (I put it in 2nd or 3rd to get a good start from a traffic light).
Shift away!
By the way, has anyone had to replace one of these transmissions under warranty or out of pocket yet?
