General Info Please -Oil & Filter

Yes, I've searched the forum but didn't find the answers.
What is the recommended oil (brand and viscosity) for my 430 CLK (208), as well as filter. Are there any good aftermarket filters or should I spring for an MB filter.

Thanks
Narwal

Oil = Mobil 1 0W-40

Filter - Mann is same as OEM. There is a paper or Fleece version. The Fleece is about twice as much and listed as "extended service" part # HU7185X - I have been using this combo, and changing every 10K miles per the dash maint. interval (Service A).

The filters come with the necessary O-rings.

Oil: 8.5 Qt. Mobil 1 10W40 High Mileage (Walmart, 5Qt. bottle $24.97, need 2)

Oil Filters:
Fram CH8481 $10.57 at Walmart
Wix #51226. $12.49 at Oreilly
STP #S8481 $11.59 at Autozone
Napa #1226 $12.99 at Napa

Tools:
8mm socket on 1/4" drive to remove pan shroud.
13mm box wrench or socket on 3/8" drive to remove drain plug.
Pic to remove o-rings from filter housing stem.

NOTES:
I buy 2 or 3 filters at a time so that they are ready to go at next oil change. Check each filter to be certain it contains the o-ring package.
Pick up two 5 Qt. bottles of oil, so have extra 1.5 Qt. left over to top off engine if oil gets low.
I keep a Qt. bottle in the trunk at all times. Can reuse same Qt. bottle, just refill from extra 1.5 left over from oil change. Used to use Mobil 1 15w50, now use 10W40 High Mileage.

I believe Mercedes spec is 0w40, Mobil 1 "european formula" you can also get this at Wal-Mart. The Mann filters are all over the web, even the fleece one is less than $10.

Here's a link to youtube, there are plenty of vids out there. This engine is basically the same, from an S500

Thanks to everyone for all the advice.

My only question is what oil to use. Is it 10-40 or 0 40?

Thank you.

I use 0-40 my car is at 240,000 kms almost now, and i still use the 0-40.
I change my oil how my driving is if i sit in traffic lots and idle it will be changed way sooner.
Oil always looks fresh on the dip stick.
I tried 10 40 once and i **** you not my fuel consumption doubled on a trip back home, swapped oil to the 0 40 and it was back to normal.
That is a fact fuel prices didn't go up, the oil was thicker made engine work harder imo i would rather my engine take it easier.
Seriously drove some serious distance and it was noticeable payed double every fill up.

The dealers use 0-40 mobile 1 well they did way back when i was lazy. 0-40 is recommended for our cars
Use oem filters Mann the high end ones not the cheap crappy filter media type that come apart and end up through your engine.

I know some people use a pump to suck out oil i do not do this just pull plug under car and let drain.
You can set up a tiered set up with blocks of wood to get just up enough without tearing body parts off the car.
Don't overfill it or you will get the dreaded overfull/ reduce oil light on the car.
Just read capacity and follow it to the exact mark from the manual in the glove box.
Don't forget to reset the Service A setting..

According to the drivers handbook, you can use a range of oil based on the temperature range that your car is driven in. The first number is the lower base viscosity level of the oil when the engine is cold and the second number is the viscosity of the oil when the engine is hot.

The hot end is all the same for us, and Mercedes have spec'd it at 40. However, the cold end will depend on your environment. For example, where I live the temperature will never go below 20 degrees C (hasn't in all recorded history) so I can happily run 20W40 and the engine will be absolutely fine as it's within the specifications laid out by Mercedes. However, if your temperature goes below that, then you will need a more viscous oil when cold.

With 10k oil service intervals, I prefer 5w40. Oil thins over time and with a 10k interval the viscosity provides more wear protection. 0w40 would probably net improved fuel economy. Pricewise it's tough to beat Shell Rotella oil. Its one of the least expensive synthetic oils and preforms very well in blackstone lab tests.

Does anyone experience any oil consumption with 0w40? I have literally experienced 0 measurable oil consumption with 5w40 over 10k which is really rare with any car.

I use Mobil 1 0W40, no burn, no loss. I also add Z-max to the oil change 2oz a qt or almost 18oz, car runs more quiet, torque seems noticeable. Been doing it with my Porsche for years.

I'm glad you're doing well with your 10w40 and no oil consumption. You know that z max is snake oil though? They were fined years ago for false advertising.

The FTC case was in 2001 but you might still be able to get a refund on the product?

I use Mobile One 0w40 European Formula in my w209 all year long. I live in Toronto and the temp can vary between +30C to -30C from summer to winter.

In my local stores, the prices of all Mobile One oils are similar so why not 0w40. This 0w40 European Fromular is exactly what the MB dealers use here.

Thank You

Thanks to all who responded.
As per the last poster I also live in Toronto, and went
with the MoBills 1 0-40.
Also used a K&N filter. $12.00 online vs $24 at stores.

Thanks again.

Actually, my last post is not 100% correct.

I found out last year that the local dealerships (cooperate stores) had started to use Mobile One 5w40 for oil changes. They can use 0w40 only if the customer specifically asks for it.

At the parts department, they sell both oils at the same price.
