i'm sorry, you must have misunderstood my post!

i was simply reiterating (from my experience) the point that the Benz had less reliability issues, and was a better investment at the end of the day!

Sorry, I only have my PhD, I thought you meant the M5 was better when you said
the point is..... i literally traded in a CLK320 with 150,000 kms (220HP) in for an E39 M5 with 40,000 kms (400HP). Why is that? Better investment, better retail value, better reliability and better cost effectiveness!
That does say Better investment, and better reliability, when referring to the BMW, correct? I thought so..

Don't be knockin' the bimmerforums mods with some of the hooey served up in this thread.

Anyhow, about the car comparison, how hard can it be to hook up a 540i and a CLK430?

Its not hard, just extremely expensive to "hook" up a clk, not sure about a 540. But if its anywhere close to $11,000 superchargers and $5000 body kits, $2000 suspension kits. You better be damn sure your keeping the car.

My wife has a 528i and I have a CLK430. Both are great cars, and well engineered. There are major differences in the two cars, but I won't say either are superior, just different. But as many have said, for a reason. The BMW is a sedan and of course the CLK is a coupe.
If you are wanting an apple, obviously you shouldn't buy an orange.
Personally, we love both!
I am curious of how a CLK 430 would stand up to a race with a 540. Anyone had any experiences with this?

are you serious???

let me find that video of me racing am E39 540i! I jumped the 540 by two car lengths and by the time he overtook me, i hit 180 km/h! Oh did i forget to mention that i was driving a CLK320 AMG?

I am confident the CLK430 would shred the 540!

COOL! Can you help me out with the kph conversion to mph. They have been trying to get us Alabama folks to switch to kilometers but we are just starting to put up street signs and telegraph lines. LOL

1 km = 0.6213 miles

therefore 180 km/h = 111.83 mph

don't you mean a CLK320 with CLK55 badge

dude, the CLK320 can't even beat the 330Ci off the line, how can it beat the 540i. You sure it's not one of them 520i badged as a 540?

Frank remember that Ahmed lives in the Middle East and the Mercedes CLKs that are available over there (as well as in Europe and Asia) are very different than their brothers here in the USA.

The CLK320 AMG is not the same as a US-Spec CLK320. We, as the American car buyer are often given the "Baby, Kid-Version" of the exact same car offered in Europe, no matter what the brand.

Consider:

2000 Audi S4 U.S. 250hp / Europe 385 hp.

1996 E36 BMW U.S. 240hp / Europe 280hp.

Overall the European Car mfgs. "tune down" their cars for us in America. Lucky us!

the number you put up for the S4 one's for the S4 the other one is for the RS-4 avant. They are totally different. The S4 sold in the Europe and US are the same with 250hp bi-turbo engine.

the E36 M3 on the other hand, the US spec had a modified 2.8 liter to 3.0 in 95 (later became 3.2) puts out around 240hp and where the European version of the M3 was powered by a completely different 3.0/3.2 liter engine that had 321hp.

I do know there's AMG pkg available for other countries, etc., but in Ahmed's case, that wasn't it. His CLK320 was actually a designo model and later one he modded it w/ replica AMG rims and slapped on the CLK55 badge and try to passes off as a CLK55 on the board. There were quite many people who asked him to post some picture of the engine bay, but he never did.

The CLK320 with AMG pkg doesn't include any engine mods btw. There's no difference between the AMG pkged CLK320 and the regular CLK320.

also, they don't tune it down because of they wanted it to. Very often it's because of the strict emission law we have in the states.

Emmissions, lower speed limits, insurance, and maintenance- Americans don't want valve adjustments either...

Plus, by and large, Americans drive poorly. It's getting downright scary out there now with 300hp minivans and stuff.

My M Coupe went from fast, to mid-pack in 4-5 years. On the plus, the 2.8 liter derived S52 3.2 is ROCK SOLID, though heavy as hell and not super high revving...

guys please, can we not re-live it all over again?

yes i did have a CLK320, and YES i did badge it 55 and NO, never in my mind did i ever try to pass it as a 55 nor did i ever say it was!

And YES, i did post pics of my engine compartment, just do a search on MAF sensors and/or Cold Air Intake and u will see it.

I have abcolutely no motive in lying, i dont need to and i certainly dont enjoy it either. It happened and only i know the truth. I will indeed find the video of that exact race and upload it! I promise!

In the meantime, for those who find it unbelievable, thats totally understandable.. why would a 230 HP benz jump a 290HP BMW ???

Hey! I raced a camaro Z28 in my modded M5 a few nights ago and he whipped my *** by a good 2 car lengths!! Am i surpeised?? NO!

I whipped a CL500 in my dad's E38 740iL! Is that possible? YES, and it happened! Big deal!

Was the other driver really bad? maybe! so whats the point???? The point is ME sharing my experience with you guys! Whether insane as it may be, IT IS NOT A LIE!

Oh and by the way... speaking of BMW 330's, i ate them for lunch every time!

i will scan a copy of my CLK's specs and options for you guys to judge, it came with AMG optical packages as well as mechanical such as suspension, exhaust and ECU fuel timing remapped!

It was picked up from the dealers with an AMG badge that alot of you thought was ridiculous, and YES i replaced it with a 55! Mistake? maybe, but i felt good about it!Couldnt afford the real thing, why? Cause it costs well over 120 grand here!

can i get one from the states? YES but then again, specs are not the same and fuel quality is different, speed limit is less, horsepower is less! FORGET IT!!

Frank, Thanks for the update. I agree with everything you said, except one thing.

I have learned that 2000-2002 Audi S4s in Europe were rated at 265 Hp, while our version was listed as 250 hp.

They are the same engine, and with the HP difference being so small, there were rumors that either only the exhaust was different between the two or Audi USA just "fudged" the numbers a bit on the brochures and government reports to cap the HP at the 250hp ceiling!

SAE and DIN calculation will also cost differences.

I agree 100%.
I bought a CLK 430 about a month ago, and it had 430 and AMG badging on the trunk. I've seen where some of the members were ticked at non-AMG owners sporting AMG badging, but I don't see the problem. I bought my car with AMG badging, and was going to have it removed, but then I started thinking about my reasonng for removing it and reconsidered.
You have to ask yourself why before removing it.
In my case, why should I risk pulling off paint on a vehicle that I worked hard to pay for to just make others happy! In my case, it just didn't make sense. I wouldn't have put it on initially, but now that it's on, I'm not going to remove it either unless I plan on repainting it one day, but that won't be soon. I'm proud of the car regardless of the badging, and I'm sure there are many people who would love to have it even if it had no badging at all, or something else on it.
In summary, life IS short so you do what you want with YOUR CAR and let others do the same. We all love our cars, have paid for them ourselves, and can individualize them as we want, or accept them as they are. Be glad you have what you have, because there are many who are not as fortunate, like I have been for most of my life, and judge no one for what they have or do to their cars.
Just my $0.02, for what it's worth!
