Unhappy Horrible Engine Noise...help...
I turn my car on the other day (1998 CLK320) and I hear this loud squeeling noise coming from the engine area. I thought it might be a belt or something, as it seems to be coming from the front part of the engine, and sounds like like the typical noise made by worn belts. I turn the car on again later (it drives fine as far as I can tell) and the noise is very loud and makes a squeeling/crackling/rattling sound for about 5 seconds before "calming" to the above squeek, then eventually disapears. Tried to spay WD-40 to the tensioner pulley, no help. Sounds like it could be a broken ball bearing on one of the pulleys or something WORSE??? ANy ideas?? Thanks.

Check the harmonic balancer for damage/cracks. Do not drive the car if you see that this needs repair.

What/where is the harmonic balancer??? What is its function and what does it look like? Thanks, Rick.

Don't think it is the harmonic balancer, it looks fine. Any other known issues or do I have to go to MB?????

I'd say belts as well. Unless you have an Opossum (sp?) in your engine like my friend's Prelude lol

which one is the belt tension pulley?? I saw a piece in the engine wobbling, it is one of the pulleys connected to the belt, not the harmonic balancer, not the alternator, but in between with the 4 bolts in it.... what is that and has anyone seen this before????
