Dealer upgraded my 2000 CLK Coupe?!?!?!

My warranty is about to expire, at my request the dealer upgraded the following on my car.

Window motor : so now it lowers 2 inches on open and close. I thought only Cabs needed this???

Command Upgrade : the buttons are stiffer, otherwise everything seems to run really nicely...no random LCD blackouts, and CD recognition problems.

Rear sun screen replaced : haven't tested it yet.

New Key : I guess I had to surrender my big key to get the new little key. The notch hodling the sliding key was breaking.

New Startac phone : Yup, apparently this is covered under the car warranty as well. (old model)

and many many others...so this is just a fyi..in case you didn't know what was also covered in the manufacturers warranty

they changed your key from the large to the small? did they have to change the ignition on the inside of the car or not?

the keys come preprogrammed from Germany, so nothing needs to be changed within the car.

Warranty

So, you just walked into the dealer and bought the extended warranty and they did all that changes for your car? That is tempting as mine already went out at Dec '03. And I do have a problem(CD changer). And I like that small key you mentioned above...

Actually I had extended warranty already...but my car is at the point where the manufacter's warranty is about to expire. The extended warranty does not cover many things...which is not explicitly stated in the agreement. This extended warranty comes from Mercedes Benz...not some third party. As I understand it...you can buy the extend warranty at a reduced price within a year after purchasing your car new. If you buy it after a year, then the price goes up significantly. The only other way to get some sort of certification if your car warranty is about to die out, is to get your car starmarked. So far my service guy has not been able to figure out how to get this for my car.

I will keep working on it though....so it seems there's another way around the extended warranty...which makes me mad at the same time...cause now this could mean there's no value in my extend warranty should I sell my car.

My message to my fellow CLKers is to see if you can get the car starmarked...cause that means your car will be warrantied by Mercedes for the stipulated duration...which sounds basically like a manufacturer's warranty. slick eh?

In order to get your car Starmark certified, the dealer would have to buy your CLK from you (or take in on trade) and then re-sell the car back to you with the extended warranty....a pricey way to go IMO.

Extended Warranty

Thanks, redbrick. As I asked my brother who owns a E500 now, he told me the same thing. So, since mine is already out of warranty, it is too late to get one, anyway. Currently I have a private mechanic(who worked for Mercedes before retiring) to do maintenance on my car. But under some circumstances, it's good to have the dealer doing the job. At least there is a short period of warranty, whatever that's.

Chappy...you're right...at this point that's about the only way to get that manufacturer's warranty/starmark...not a good idea.

I'll see what my service guy comes up with...
