Brembo Brakes

I was thinking about ordering Brembo rotors, and i have a couple of questions...
Will my stock calipers work with the Brembo rotors?
Do they stay the goldish color like in pictures, or turn silver after use?
In getting just rotors first, is it possible to get the brembo caliper later on?
Where can I get the best price?

Thanks for the help

Yes, your stock calipers will fit the Brembo rotors. They initially appear gold because they come weather treated. After driving on them, they will turn silver. The Brembo rotors that fit the stock calipers will not fit the Brembo calipers. The Brembo Big Brake kit comes with it's own bigger/thicker calipers. If you would like, I can help you get either.

$$$?

Hey, I was just wondering how much do the rotors cost by themselves and how much is the Big Brake kit. Also how much improvement on stopping distances can I expect? Thank you

The rotors will help stopping a little, especially under heavy braking as they dissapate heat better. The Big Brake Kit will help a lot! There really isn't any comparision between the Brembo kit and the stock brakes. When I first installed mine on my CLK, I found myself being almost stopped about 15 ft back from stop signs, so I would have to let go of the brake and coast up to the stop sign! Brembo brakes are also smoother, as the pad covers a greater surface area. The brake system is also much lighter than stock. The caliper alone is approximately 10lbs lighter. The CLK kit comes in either a 13.1" kit or a 14" kit, and uses a 4-piston caliper that provides more than enough stopping power.

Rotors are $164 for the fronts and $138 for the rears (CLK 320/430). The 55 rotors are more, as they are larger. The Big Brake kits for the CLK start at $3,295 for the front.

The big brake kit is worth every penny. I have them on our project CLK and they stop and look fantastic!!!! I had similar experiences as Ben and they are every bit as good as we claim them to be.

So $3k for front brakes and another $3k for rear brakes, $6k for brakes? I guess if they save your life one day when you're doing 140mph they are worth it.

While it does help, it is not necessary to upgrade the rear calipers. The front brakes account for 80% of the car's braking, so upgrading the rear would not be close to as noticeable. The rear calipers are smaller, and would be significantly cheaper than the fronts.

Ben,

You mentioned rotors are $164 for the fronts, is that one or two?

It's not only about saving your life... it's also about having quicker and more controlled braking, which will allow you to drive your car more aggresively. I know that with my current setup (and the way I drive) I would not be comfortable on stock 430 brakes. The Brembos make a big difference, however, I don't think they are necessary for everyone.

Ben, are there better brake pads I can upgrade to? I think my rotors will need to be replaced soon, and I'm interested in the Brembo rotors for the stock brakes. I'd love the big brake kit, but I really can't bear to spend more money on this car.

Also, on another point, I just got Koni 5-way adjustables to go with my H+R sport springs. Unfortunately, my car's gotten even lower and my tires are rubbing the wheel wells pretty badly on hard corners. The spring pads are the ones from the factory, but it is possible to get thicker pads? My car's just too damn low! Thanks for your help .

Since you can only use the brembo rotors the same size as stock...what exactly is the size of the stock rotors??

on a side note....
What color do you guys think I should paint my calipers?
I have a silver 430
bright silver?
red?
maybe chrome?

Silver or red would look good on your calipers. I painted 'em red and I love them.

There aren't many decent pads available for the CLK, I would have to check into it for you. Your shocks should not have effected the car's height. Are you rubbing badly? It may be easier to simply have your fenders rolled. What size wheels and tires do you have?

I've had 'em rolled in the back, but it's not the fenders that are the problem. My front tires rub against the top of the inside of the wheel well. They've rubbed clean through the plastic wheel well covering. Despite what you say, the shocks definitely affected something- the car actually looks mildly lower than it was with the stock shocks. I just don't understand why these shocks actually cause more bottoming out than the stock shocks? Could it be that they're not the "Sport" shocks or whatever, which are supposed to be for lowered cars?

And is it possible to get thicker spring pads?

1. Yes, most likely you can get thicker pads (what do you have now?).
2. If your stock shocks were shot, then the Koni's would resist the pressure of the springs and bring the car back down to where it should be.
3. What size wheels and tires?
4. What type of spring?
5. Is your car weighed down in the rear when this happens?

Mach, sorry it took me a while to get back to you-

1) Don't know
3) 18x8.5 front (235 tires), 18x9.5 rear (265s)
4) H+R Sport
5) Happens constantly. The more people in the car, the worse. I had a rubbing problem in the rear before, but I had the fenders rolled and they clear fine now. It sounds like the tires are actually meeting the top of the wheel well in the back, and I know they're doing so in front.

Give me an email, we'll schedule a time to get your car looked at in the shop.
