Tapping sound from the engine?

Hi all,

I was driving around for quite a while yesterday and after a while, I noticed that there appeared to be a tapping sound coming from around the engine compartment (I think). The tapping sound, which comes in 1 second intervals, only happens when the car is not in motion or moving extremely slowly.

Any ideas?

Mine did the same thing. I took it to the dealer and they said it was either some trash in the "bird cage", I'm assuming that's part of the blower or the AC blower motor was bad. It turned out to be the blower motor and it was replaced under warranty.

Thanks! I brought my car in today and was told that they'll need a couple of days to work on it to find out what the problem is.

Mine did the same thing for quite a while now. Is it a problem with everybody or it is just for some ? Well I guess I have to bring it to the dealer then.

Just got a call from the dealer. It appeared to have been a valve for the heater which was replaced under warranty.

Make sure you ask to speak to the tech and let them listen to that sound when you drop off your car. I had to go back a second time because the tech was not able to replicate the problem when i dropped it off, though he probably didn't try very hard.

ditto. I had to tale mine back twice as well. Like I said previously, mine was a bad blower motor. They replaced it in less than an hour, while I waited, and it solved the tapping.

ok, the problem wasn't fixed I brought the car back again, and hopefully it'll be fixed when I pick it up. They have no idea how long it'll take to identify and fix the problem

If the sound increases when the air conditioning fan speed increases it's probably the blower motor like mine. It's worth having them check it at least.

Unhappy

All right. I have a problem here, Gab do yours actually always have the tapping nouse ? Because I notice mine that it sometimes don't have any noise although I turn on the AC and like every other day. But sometimes it is there.

If I bring it to the dealer and ask the tech guy to listen. Suddenly the sound is not there, how would they know ?

The tapping sound in my car is actually there about 80%-90% of the time. Sometimes, it's lounder than others.

However, you do bring up a good point. They probably wouldn't be able to troubleshoot the problem if the sound isn't there when you bring it in. Do you live or work close to the dealer? If so, you can just swing by whenever it's making the noise so that the service advisor can make a note of it.

Well, I am living in the bay area and I can just pop in the dealer there. But the dealer I am used to going is the one in San Jose. About an Hour trip. Well, all right then I just solve this myself.
Thanks anyway

You should be able to bring your car to the closer dealer for just this problem. Better to take care if it while you still have warranty

I had the same issue with my 01 430 when the ac was on, it was coming from the device that had something to do with coolant running through it and had something to do with blending the temp of the climate control system, it looked like two dull small silver cylinders about the size of home ac fuses on the passenger side of the engine. If someone takes a good picture of the engine bay I can describe exactly where and what part it is.

My car has been at the dealership for 2 weeks now and they still have no $^$&@^@#% idea what's wrong with it. What do these guys actually do anyway? To make matters worse, the service advisor asked me to not call him and that he'll call if and when he has news, but of course he has no idea when that might be.

I'm most likely going to pull it out of that bad excuse for a MB stealership and bring it to another one. Am also thinking of calling MBUSA customer service but am unsure if that'll accomplish anything.

Any thoughts?

For anyone who is interested, I finally got my car back from the dealership after what seemed to be forever. They weren't able to fix the problem, so they added some insulation to muffle the sound.

The interior of the car was also quite dirty with shoe marks on the passenger door, presumably from the tech's shoes when he was working on it. Ironically, the car also seems to squeak now when going over bumps (it didn't do that before). I'm done dealing with that dealership.

I just can't believe that all this came from a MB dealership.
