I saw that you are both a Certified Mercedes-Benz technician and a State of California Advanced Emissions Specialist.

I am moving to LA next month from NC and was wondering if I needed to change anything on my car to meet CA emission requirments. Also... do I have to put a license plate in the front of my car or is it an option?

Thanks

I live in Greensboro (greensboring) NC. I have been here way to long! I just got accepted to AFI American Film Institute in Los Angeles (afi.com) for the MFA in Film Producing. I am actually packing right now (2am). For every box I pack is another small step for man on getting out of this backwoods town. Raleigh is not that bad I should have chosen NC State for college but my stupidity chose UNCG.

It’s a 2001 CLK320 coupe.

Your car is 50 state legal and will pass emissions just fine in California. If you intend to register your car in California you will receive 2 license plates. Per the California Vehicle Code you are required to put one of the plates on the front of your vehicle.

Adam is right. If your car is 50-state legal, it will pass CA's emissions test. Even if it's not California-certified, it only has to meet the emissions requirements for the state it was originally sold in.

If you really like it then just leave it on. It's just a law and laws were meant to be broken anyway. I'm sure a little "fix-it" ticket isn't going to land you in jail or anything.

My car didn't have a front license bracket on it when I bought it, but I put one on anyways. Hell, it's already got a freakin' battering ram on the front, a license plate doesn't matter much. On the flipside, about once every 2 weeks a customer will have me install their front license plate because they got cited for it. Food for thought.

________

Is there a fee for the ticket? Or is it just a warning?

front plate

I removed my plate the week I bought my '99 clk430 new from the dealer. I've never been cited for that (though my speeding citations could wallpaper a small apartment). A couple of years ago, I replaced my stock front valance with a Brabus front air dam. Now the only way to attach a front plate would be velcro.

I have always been opposed to front plates on my cars and over the years I have been nailed twice for it. Both times in L.A. by meter maids looking to generate revenue for the city I suppose. (I live south of the L.A. area and am only there maybe a dozen times a year). These are considered fix it tickets and require you to put a plate on and have it signed off by an officer with a fine. I recall that it ran about $25 bucks and I had to go to a substation in L.A. for the sign off.

The moral of the story is screw 'em. I'm still not putting one on permanently.
