Yeah, you might get a 1-3 hp gain, and a slightly deeper exhaust note. Some even report more throttle response. Go for it.

I can't live without it. Had it just over one year, in a 2001 Vette, 2001 SL500 and now the CLK55. Had it hardwired to the right hand-side of the rear view mirror, w/wires going to the cigarette lighter.

I found that the V1 owners think their detector is better in forum discussions. Same rationale as "vanilla is better than chocolate".

From the function, reliability, ease of operation, design and price standpoints, the Escort is my preferred choice.

Does CLK 430 and CLK 55 have the same air box?

I also have an Escort 8500 but I still don't trust it.
There have been times when I have ran up on a few highway police cars and the detector never alarmed.

Most police cars on regular patrol do NOT have their radar turned on, - hence NO alarm/signal on your radar detector.

radar test

Karl,

We tested the radar dectors back to back. Actually we had 2 v1's and a 8500 on the top of a windshield of a BMW 540. Both of the V1's gave warnngs from 30 seconds to 1 minute before the Escort on open highway in Cali. Radar was always from CA CHP using Ka band. Don't know about the other types of radar, but to me this was conclusive that the V1 was far better then the escort at least on the highways here in CA where Ka is most commonly used.

This was actually an expensive test, as it was one of the deciding factors in me puckering up and spending the 4 bills!

Thanks

Brad

Thanks Brad for sharing your test experience. Perhaps you had a bum/bad 8500. Here in Florida, KA band is also most widely used, not only be FHP but also local patrol cars and motorcyle cops. I always receive plenty of head-up warnings on the KA band.

http://www.radartest.com/DS4HEM.html

This article rated the 8500 Passport/Escort's sensitivity much better than the V1:

"Detector Shootout: We Test 4 High-End Models"
by Craig Peterson

quote:

"Instead of manually selecting city or highway mode we tested the Passport 8500 in its unique Auto Mode and let the microprocessor automatically regulate sensitivity. Apparently it's a pretty smart microprocessor, allowing a single false alarm on the urban loop with no compromises in detection range on the road.

It ferreted out the lethal digital Ka-band radar gun at 40,222 feet, a virtual tie with the BEL 980 but fully 3.2 miles before the Valentine One.

In the difficult curve test its X-band city-mode range bettered the BEL 980's by 1,681 feet and the V1's by 4,260 feet, a staggering 311 percent." unquote

Brad, you like your V1, I like my 8500 while being a safe driver, accident and ticketfree, - knock on wood... Hope that you have a similar record.

Best of luck!

Karl
