Tires - Can I put Different ones on?
I need to replace the two rear tires on my 2001 CLK430 CAB. The front ones are almost new (put on by the dealer before I bought the car) and are Michlin Pilot Sport, 225/45ZR/17.
The 2 rear ones are Michlin Pilot SX 245/40ZR/17, and are not quite bald.
I wanted to buy 2 new Goodyear Eagles F1 GS D3 for the rear but was advised not to mix brands because of different handling characteristics.
My front and rear tires are not matched now (but both are Pilots) so why can't I put different ones on the rear?
Is there really that much of a problem?
I only drive the car about 6,000 miles per year, I don't drive agressively, don't race, and almost never go above 110, and then only once or twice a year. I do drive about 85-90 when on the interstate.
I need some good advice from those who understand Mercedes. Thanks in advance.

Yeah you definitely don't have to go with Michelins. If you really want to save money a lot of people have had good experience with Falkens or Kumhos.

Thanks for those who answered. A couple of more questions -How dangerous is it to mix brands on front/rear? WHat real life result should I expect?

I dont think there will be any danger involved with mixing brands. my concern is that 2 brands will wear out differently. always try to replace tires in pairs if you cant do all at the same time.

It's not really that dangerous, but liike terabyte said the wear characteristics will be different and aesthetically, it will have a cheap, Mickey Mouse look to it.

You should stick to the same tyres (brand and type) across the same axle. Personally, I always replace in pairs anyway.
For 4WD cars, I always keep to the same type all round.
