Plug wires take a lot of heat/abuse. Good idea.

I ended up just getting bosch platinums. They were like $2.50 a piece....and solved all my misfire problems.

In the end, good plugs are all the same. And if you get better performance and better gas mileage with more expensive plugs, it's only because your wallet is lighter.

Changed mine out at 60,000. The original platinun Beru's are good plugs but the NGK's require less energy to spark and last as long or longer, though I wouldn't go over 30,000 miles on any plug.

From AllData:

Replace Spark Plugs

DANGER:

* Risk of death. Death may result if contact is made with parts carrying high voltages.
* Do not touch parts carrying high voltages.
* Persons who wear electronic implants (e.g. heart pacemakers) must not carry out work on the ignition system.

1.1 Remove top part of air cleaner housing

NOTE: Only on engines with air cleaner fitted at vehicle side.

2.1 Remove hot film mass air flow sensor together with air intake pipe, install

NOTE: Only on engines with air cleaner fitted at vehicle side.

3 Remove engine trim panel or cleaner

NOTE: Remove engine cover or air cleaner by lifting vertically up and off the cylinder head covers.

4 Remove ignition coils (T1/4)
5 Disconnect spark plug connectors

NOTE: Pry spark plug connector off with "Double Opened Wrench" over cylinder head covers. See "Special Tools" given below.

6 Remove spark plugs (R4)

See "Special Tools - Spark Plug Wrench" given below.

Torque Spark plugs(All Engines) - 28 N.m (CLK 320-55)
Spark plugs(Engine 113.987/ 990/ 991) - 25 N.m

7 Install in the reverse order

I use a 17mm wrench, place behind the boot and push on the other end against the engine block. Use a 15mm wrench end to push the boots back on when the plugs arein, push until you hear a "click".
Do not pull on the plug wires.
Remove the bolt holding the coils and the wire going into the coils before removing the plugs.
LABLE WHICH PLUG WIRE GOES TO THE FRONT PLUG AND WHICH TO THE REAR PLUG FOR EACH COIL REMOVED. Easy enough.
I spent a total of 75$ and about 1 hour on the job for a 320, 12 plugs.
You have to remove the MAS on the passenger side, easy enough.

Good luck.
Stupid question: I have a 1999 CLK 430, I'm a do it yourself person. I looked at changing my spark plugs and noticed there were more wires than a standard car. Reading things on this sight, do I have 16 plugs to replace on my car? Runs great I purchase with 70,000 miles no has 95,000.

Yep, 16 plugs on the V8. It's not horrible changing them out, but those back ones get tight.

I'm looking at buying the same plugs by NGK: BKR5EGP. The owner's manual calls for NGK: PFR 511.

Anyone know what the difference is?

If anyone is using these: How does your car run with the BKR5EGP? When should they be changed again? Also, did you have to gap them when you installed them or were they pre-gapped?

CLK320 Cabrio 2001
I used Denso plugs on my 2001 CLK320 Cabrio.

I did a lot of research and went with the Denso Iridium Power Plugs; .4mm Iridium electrode. That’s the worlds smallest.

Unbelievable performance and fuel mileage gain.

Keep in mind that the cabrio gets worse gas mileage than the coupe; lots of drag on the ragg top and worse when it’s down.

On the mileage gain I get 30 MPG on the highway!

On the performance gain: there is absolutely no hesitation when I punch the gas pedal from a stationary position. Furthermore, when you punch the gas while doing 40+ watch out! The excelleration is incredible!

I got my plugs from Advance Auto for $11.20 each.

Next... I will install a flexfuel convertor from www.change2e85.com. They are the company that is recommended from the efuel100 company. Will run E85 and then will get E100. The more ethanol in the Combustion system vs. petrol will extend the life of the engine; ethanol leaves basically no carbon residual. You can get E85 on long island for 2.78 per gallon.

2000 CLK 430
Question

I plan on changing my spark plugs pretty soon. Do I have to do anything with the GAP of the spark plugs. I plan on going with NGK plugs.

Should I just buy and install - not worry about anything else or do I need to worry about adjusting the gap of the NGK plugs prior to install?

Thanks for the help.

Any mechanic that pulls the wires rather than using the correct tool to remove them, wouldn't be my choice.

Note:

Can purchase the offset 17mm wrench from ebay seller SG-Motorsports .. which is the special tool noted in post #1.

Should make the install easier...
