Spark Plugs

Hi,
Anyone try NGK Part # 4696 (Laser Irdrium IFR5D10) Spark Plug? or NGK (Laser Platium PFR5G-11)? My car reached 70k miles and have problem starting the car sometimes. I think to replace spark plugs can solve the problem..
Any Opinion?
Thanks

I see a lot of people on this board recommend NGK, are they better than Bosch platinum?

That sounds like a lot of money for plugs. It's a relatively easy procedure to do it yourself. I use the NGK iridiumX. http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/apps/ca...engineid=27023

Changed mine out at 60,000. The original platinun Beru's are good plugs but the NGK's require less energy to spark and last as long or longer, though I wouldn't go over 30,000 miles on any plug.

From AllData:

Replace Spark Plugs

DANGER:

* Risk of death. Death may result if contact is made with parts carrying high voltages.
* Do not touch parts carrying high voltages.
* Persons who wear electronic implants (e.g. heart pacemakers) must not carry out work on the ignition system.

1.1 Remove top part of air cleaner housing

NOTE: Only on engines with air cleaner fitted at vehicle side.

2.1 Remove hot film mass air flow sensor together with air intake pipe, install

NOTE: Only on engines with air cleaner fitted at vehicle side.

3 Remove engine trim panel or cleaner

NOTE: Remove engine cover or air cleaner by lifting vertically up and off the cylinder head covers.

4 Remove ignition coils (T1/4)
5 Disconnect spark plug connectors

NOTE: Pry spark plug connector off with "Double Opened Wrench" over cylinder head covers. See "Special Tools" given below.

6 Remove spark plugs (R4)

See "Special Tools - Spark Plug Wrench" given below.

Torque Spark plugs(All Engines) - 28 N.m (CLK 320-55)
Spark plugs(Engine 113.987/ 990/ 991) - 25 N.m

7 Install in the reverse order

I use a 17mm wrench, place behind the boot and push on the other end against the engine block. Use a 15mm wrench end to push the boots back on when the plugs arein, push until you hear a "click".
Do not pull on the plug wires.
Remove the bolt holding the coils and the wire going into the coils before removing the plugs.
LABLE WHICH PLUG WIRE GOES TO THE FRONT PLUG AND WHICH TO THE REAR PLUG FOR EACH COIL REMOVED. Easy enough.
I spent a total of 75$ and about 1 hour on the job for a 320, 12 plugs.
You have to remove the MAS on the passenger side, easy enough.

Good luck.

The "lot of money" comment was to another post I saw where someone was quoted 250-450$ to change the plugs. Wrong thread.

Which plugs did you buy?

I got my NGK's over the net at Clubplug http://www.clubplug.net/retail_iridium_ngk.html for 6.50 a piece no tax.

PepBoys also has them for about the same price and you don't have to wait 2 weeks for shipping.

The procedure to replace isn't to bad I thought.

Yes, it just click once and shut off. I think because the spark plug is time to change...
So you think is the problem w/ the bad starter? how much to replace it?

i dunno the symptoms of bad spark plugs, but with the starter i know it acts up more when the car is already warm. well i guess until it's really bad - two days ago it wouldnt start at all and had to be towed to the mechanic's. i think the starter is in the $150 range

Today I was quoted $280 for parts and labor (independent shop). I was told the plugs being used were NGK but no other specs were given. Is this too much? He said the plugs are about $10.25/ea. and it would be 1.5 hrs. of labor @ $95/hr.

it's your crankshaft position senser(cps), not your spark plugs.
bad sparkplugs would make your car misfire. it's always good to change the sparkplugs, also consider changing your wires while you are at it.
