Solutions for 3 types of rattle/noise
When I got the 2001 CLK55 to replace my wife's 1998 CLK320, I thought the rattles from the CLK320 should be mostly eliminated with the 2001 CLK. Boy, was I wrong. It is better but not good enough. My E55 and CLK55 have similiar milage(26K) but my E-class is practically rattle free. I have 3 particular rattles that bothered me until last weekend. It was the driver seat, passenger head rest and crackling sound in the rear when my car turn into a sloped driveway. Here is what I did.
1) Driver seat
The culprit is the large plastic part left of the driver seat. It squeaks once you sit your a*s in it. Take the piece off, and apply padding( I used double-side foam tape) to all the metal that comes in contact with the plastic. You can also bend the tabs on the plastic part to prevent any contacts. This pretty much eliminate teh squeaks.
2) Passenger head rest
I discovered when I was driving and there was this noise that just won't go away. It seems like it was coming from the passenger seat. When I press the head rest or the move it all the way down the noise would go away. When I removed the rear passenger seat cover I notice the head rest mechanism is somewhat flimsy and wasn't secure down adequately. My solution was to insert some foam padding(1-2 inches thick) on the inside of the rear seat cover and it stop the head rest mechanism from vibrating and rattle again.
3) Crackling and metal grinding sound
This happen when I go over some moderate bumps and turn onto a uneven or elevated driveway/road. The solution is to make sure when uprighting the read folding seats, you have to make sure you give enough force to lock the latch 100%. Or else that noise is very irritating.
After these 3 fixes, the car rides fairly quiet now. I hope this will help you some of your with the same rattles that I have.

Seconded, great work. I suspected the plastic panel as well. I think mine may have something to do with it rubbing on the leather. I may try to make some kind of cloth barrier between the two.
