Quality of CLK....really need info

Hi guys I have a previous post. Just wondering if I can get some more and reliable feedback regarding the quality/longevity of a 1999 CLK 430. The one I have I love it...it seems pretty tight. With the bulletin boards its usually problems and issues that people post...I understand this...but it is started to worry me that I may be in for a world of headaches. I can handle the $2000 approx. a year maintenance. If I have computer issues or tranny replacements of 6,000 to 9,000...well to me the car isn't worth it and I will most likely sell it. I do not have an extended warranty as I only drive 10,000 tops a yr...so the amount of money for the possibility in 20,000 to me is worth the gamble. Should I keep it or sell it??? I love the dam thing...I hope I can keep it!!! Please help

I luv my 430 as well, but I just dropped $1,500 on a new alternator & $3K on a tranny this month. Man, if I didn't luv this car, I would drop it like its hot.

Park it in the garage and save it for the weekends

I just leased a an Audi A4 1.8T for a daily because it's much cheaper to operate. The A4 corners much better, has a nicer looking interior, and get much better fuel economy. The only downside is that it's slow. Whenever I need speed, though, I get out the CLK.

I just spent $700 on parts and labor on my CLK because my wife spilled a soda over the shifter. I'm got fed up with all the little repairs that cost $500 a pop, so I park it during the week and save it for the weekends (or for important client lunches).

I love my CLK, but the maintance of keeping is ridiculous. So far I have encountered the following issues

-Constant alignment issues
-CAT converter replaced under warranty
-fog lights constantly going out
-interior rattles
-CD Changer dying on you
-oxygen senors replacing
--
I love the engine and look/feel of the car, but now I drive it on weekends. I keep a Accord for daily commuting. I have 92' accord w/ 85,000miles, no issues.

it ironic isn't it

For some....

We tend to have to spend more to keep/maintain the things we love the
most and spend so little on the things we like the least but depend on the most.

Seem similiar to the situation of some married men....it analogous to how we treat our cars.

Married men..

Who spend more on the mistress,
Less on the wife
Enjoy more the mistress
Depend most on the wife,

Not that I endorse this but...it's generally true!!

I do wash/polish my clk more than my suv.
I do seek parking spots far away or do not park beside coupes that have
wide doors like camaros.
I do spend more on the clk than the suv.
I am generally 'cleaner' when I drive the clk than the truck.

And, I do feel the the suv would be more dependable if I were to
drive cross country......it's a Toyota 4runner!!

Just my 2cents.

I have a 2002 CLK 430 and have had it about a year and have put about 15k miles on it. The only problem I have had was an AC blower motor making a noise and they replaced it under warranty. Other than that it has been trouble free.

I've had my 2000 for 5 years now. I've put 107k miles on it and my only problems have been a bad MAF meter, and a blower motor voltage regulator.

how to save some cash

These cars are complex pieces of machinery. Way more complex than your ordinary Camry or Accord. Things are bound to go bad. Just be glad you don't own a 211 out of warranty. You'll really be cryin then. If I were you become friends with MB mechanic.

I've had mine for about 5 years. When I first got it I mainly used it as a weekend vehicle, but within the past year i've had to use it as a daily driver (I had to the sell my maxima). I haven't had any major trouble, but I can smell it coming. Little things are starting to come apart and its aggrevating. In my case, I can't wait to get rid of it in the fall and buy something a little more reliable and less expensive to maintain. I like the car but it ain't that serious for me keep it (for what?) . The engines on these vehicles are strong, but useless if it's powered by electronics that can crash at any time. I wish the Germans would build a strong reliable good handling vehicle without the complex foolishness. Yeah it's cool to say that a benz has this and that but that **** is useless if it only works when it wants to work.

All cars nowadays are complex pieces of machinery. Not just Benz, but also Japanese imports like Acura,Lexus,Infinti's. They apparently do not have the same issues as many benz, so i do not agree on that point. The JD Power survey didn't even have benz in the top ten is year. At least to me, that is an indication, that the level of quality and customer satisfaction has significantly dropped over the years.

Things are bound to go bad. Yes, I agree. Overall the engines of benz are top-notch. I don't have issues w/ that all. But, the nagging little problems like rattling interior noises, electrical issues, alignment problems, senors, malfunction of codes are a mark of poor quality . Especially with a 'high-end' maker like Benz, that is not acceptable.

Hey Co 55,

We have the same car, mine is a cpe.
How has the car been treating you?

I just bought some wheels and doing some suspension mods.
So, I'm rekindling my interest in the car again.

Happy crusing

I have a 99 also and i have had no problems with the car. It has only 37k miles so it's not even broken in yet. I

It isnt a daily driver because with my 19" wheels...it's too rough. I use it only for weekends.

I have a Honda which I use as my daily.

I think the one key thing that helps to preserve the condition of a car is putting it in a garage. Mercedes or otherwise. I have yet to experience any problems. knock on wood! Everything has just been maintenance.
