How often should/do you change the battery?

My car didn't start today. First try the engine attempted to turn and the second time nothing.

The instrument panel light work fine.

Could this be the battery? I've had the car since March 2000 and the car has
original battery.

Also, should I buy a MBenz brand battery or any brand would do?

thanks for your help.

Jump start the car and see, I've just recently changed my battery because I haven't driven it for months.

Most batteries in modern cars last 4-5 years tops.

Any brand should be fine unless you show the car (points deduction for non-OEM batteries).

99CLK320,
yer not going to believe this but I bought my 99/320 in 2005 w/3623 miles on it. 30K on it today. The MB maintenance records showed that the oil had not even been changed for the first time. the recall on the serpentine belt tensioner pulley was done and I have conducted all the maintenance since then. Guess what? I still have the original battery which I had Interstate run two different stress tests on last year and they said it was A ok. True story.

Ahhhhh so there is someone out there that also has an old battery still running strong!! I have a 2000 model made in late 99 with the original battery and 156,000 miles on it. I had it stress tested and it is still a STRONG battery. I have filled it with the de-ionized water once and thats pretty much all the maintenance its needed. I will of course replace with original when this one final croaks on me. I honestly cant believe it has lasted this darn long. I had it in Florida, Germany, Georgia and now back in Texas all with the original battery NEVER leaving me stranded. (knock on wood) before it decides to do it tomorrow now.

How can you guys possibly use the same battery? Doesn't it snow where some of you live? Aren't you worried that it'll die in a snow storm, or WORSE, when some girl looks over at you and says 'let get back to your place . . . .'

Yes, I know, the battery is HUGE. It has all the power of a nuclear facility, but eventually, it will die.

Maybe I'm just paranoid. I change mine every 5 years. Which one do I use? This explains it. But, I go to the dealer.

It doesnt snow where I currently live (even though its 20 degrees with this cold front) but even if it did there is no reason to replace the battery if the CCA's are where they should be and it passes the discharge / CCA test at every single oil change. The service shop trips out on the battery as well especially at 11yrs old and 157K now! I have the 1800 number ready on my phone ready to replace it with another Mercedes original but until then I am not replacing it. It was 17 degrees this morning and thought I would be eating my words but SHE started right up this morning and this afternoon just like any other day. It will be a VERY VERY cold week so lets see if she survives the bitter cold this time around, she survived the German winter for 7 years but teh battery was alot younger then. Once the shop starts telling me that they see a decline in amperage then I will quickly replace it but until then RIDE ON!!!
