Brake squeeking?

I have about 15K miles on my 2004 and my brakes have started squeeking. It doesnt happen all the time but for about the first five times I press on the brakes while driving.

Any thoughts on what might be causing this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

if im not mistaken, premature wear should be covered. depends on the definition of premature, though.

Exclamation

Do a search, there is plenty of coverage on this topic. MB warnty's brakes for first 12,000 miles only. The squealing is a common problem with 209's, 211's etc...

on some cars the squeeking is normal, ive heard of this many times, but if the car is braking properly it must be something normal until they get worn down a little, it can also be the rotors making the noise from the same result (needs to be worn down a bit)

Thumbs down

Mine started making noise @ 5000 miles, they replaced pads and rotors and all was well until about 13,000 now the squeak is back worse than ever. It's a problem and MB knows all about it and they'll try to tell you its normal BLah Blah Blah...don't buy it.

That sounds about right. My brakes started squeaking too. I called MB and they told me that it happens but if it gets to annoying I can get the pads changed for 250 for the front and 225 for the rear.

Same here, 2004 CLK500 brought in for Service B. Dealer (FJ) informed me the front brake pads are down to 10-15%. Stated cost was $210 to replace pads only. Hefty cost but I went with it, since the SA said the pads cost $140-150. Can anyone confirm this?

Just called the parts department, cost of new front brake pads (OEM) is $103.

Sorry, I know this is an old thread.

I have a 04 CLK500, 39K miles. Brakes are squeaking while moving at slow speed. Dealer inspected and said that pads and rotors are fine. He said that there may be a "film" on the pads and rotors and advised me to brake really hard while going fast to even the surfaces out. Does this sound reasonable? Any other thought about how to fix this?

Thanks

you guys are lucky you don't need rotors with that brake job. it would bring it up to about $550 plus taxes.

What you are experiencing is soft brake components. MB uses soft pads and rotors to give you excellent brake feel and performance. A glaze will start to build up btwn the pad and rotor. What you are hearing is a squeak due to vibration of these parts against each other. I periodically take my car to a speed of about 80mph and slam on the brakes(please make sure no one is behind you). This is what the service department does to "de-glaze" the brake parts. There is also a spray that is applied to the rotors and a paste that you can put on the pad to keep the noise down. You just need to get on the brakes every once in a while and you will never hear a squeak until they are actually needing replacement. Don't go and put new pads on because it is more likely that you will continue to experience a squeak with worn rotors.
