Question Navigation system

Is the navigation system in the CLK, which is the same as the new ML, really as bad as it seems?

I just posted a few thoughts about it in the W164 forum

Your opinions?

I've had NAV systems on a number of cars. Order of quality:
1. Acura
2. Lexus
3. Infiniti
4. Mercedes

Not sure what the problem is with German cars. Still the MB model is better than nothing. I haven't had too much trouble finding addresses, but you are right that the points of interest are woefully inadequate. The same was true on my wife's Lexus RX330 when we bought it. A year later Lexus put out an update disk that was much better...a nasty way to make another $275. Let's hope that MB makes improvements on updates too.

I've owned 3 of the 4 but have used all and I agree 100%. However, there is a large gap b/w 3rd and 4th place.

No reason to use the system. Those folding maps work just fine.

mercedes are rubbish. ive got the new xj jag one. touch screen navigation. same as the comand system same price and ten times better. very disapointed with the new system. also to play a cd do you always have to take the navigation disc out? if you do that is will become soooooooooo annoying. doesnt that mean that u cant listen to a cd whilst using the navigation?

God forbid that you should actually have a car that functions properly!

I think the benz system works great. I have an 05' Escalade, and that gm navigation system is a real pos. I also have the bmw nav, and mercedes tops that too. I have 3 benz's with the same navigation (all 05's) and they all work the same, its great.

I think that MB offers CD changers for that...AND in the US people actually CAN have 2 discs in their 05 CLK "comands".

After reading posts like these, I really wonder why some of you even bother to buy MBs cause no matter what...other cars are always better.

I don't think that anyone was suggesting that the overall package on these other cars was better...just disappointed that you can get a better NAV system in a Honda than in a Benz. Maybe if enough people speak out MB will do something about it.

I agree 100% - the reason I bought the MB was because ever since I read about the 1995 C36 I have always wanted an AMG. I think I had to get it out of my system. The Japanese (Lexus/Infiniti/Acura) offer so much more bang 4 the buck but have zero prestige compared to the Germans (MB/BMW/Porsche). Why else would anyone buy an MB? Prestige has to be a large factor. -JMHO

I heard all these stories about getting around town is nothing more than 4 tyres and a seat ......

There are days when its pure hell to drive in Sydney and I can tell you that my braking system gets a good workout. Any year around graduation you have all of these new drivers on the road looking to go to parties and what-not. The superior comfort and high performance safety features really do make the fatigue factor highly minimal. There is just as much fatigue in gridlock as there could be on a long drive as the number of minutes in the drivers seat can be almost the same.

So I put on some TV, CD's, take a phone call or two, listen to the radio .... its nice to be stuck in a gridlock inside a Mercedes and I can fully appreciate how someone in a lane going past me might wish they were too.

Yep... thats it, i believe that most mb owners do it based upon prestige more than anything else. mb is a status symbol.
