Using tiptronic transmission
hi there,
I am still waiting for my clk so I dont have a certain idea about it(hopefully I will pick it up on wednesday) ... my uncle drives a C220 cdi with tiptronic transmission... he claims that while driving in the manual mode, I should press on the break pedal softly while shifting.. [like pressing clutch in manual transmissions]... he said its better to do so for the health of the transmission box... is this true??
one more question... I dunno the technical word for it but you know while using manual transmission, sometimes people hit the clutch without cutting the gas and feed extra gas into engine... it gives you a slight boost... how do you do it on tiptronic???

hmm i believe you are talking about extra gas feed
... ok, i'm down with that..
but for my first question... how should I shift the gears?? do I actually have to press lightly on the break pedal... or just shift ??

just wait till the needle goes to your desired rpm, then click the shifter right to upshift, ill admit i let go of the gas then shift then gas again for a little jump but either way works, i just hate how 2nd gear holds for so long when you really want to go to 3rd

I already tried shifting without cutting the gas or hitting break in my uncles car and it worked just fine but my uncle keeps saying that its not healthy for the transmission... anyway, I m picking up my car today, I will trust on my mechanic knowledge and just shift
worst case I get a amg gearbox a few months later

Your uncle is wasting his brakes. It is not a manual trans...not even close to one. It is designed to shift automaticly by just pressing a button.....or moving a lever.

I picked my car yesterday... damn automatic transmission rules
I didnt like the acceleration but I got it covered it a little with the manual mode... anyway, currently I m just cutting gas for a second while I shift but at least not applying any brakes... it works fine so far...

I can't say for a CLK200, but with a CLK430/500/55 at WOT the ECU retards the timing for the split second it takes for the shift to occur . As others have said, stepping on the brakes is a waste of time and may give those driving behind you the impression that you've lost your mind.
That's not a flame. Just imagine if everyone on the road hit their brakes every time their transmission shifted and I'm sure you'll see what I mean.

I know it sounds crazy, but when he said that its just not healty for gearbox, I just wanted to make sure.. anyway so far so good.. I got used to it, I m not using automatic mode a lot since acceleration suckss! no wonder 0-100 is over 10s... I hit the gas all the way on rolling and I get the response after 2 seconds in the auto. mode..

I reckon tapping the brakes whilst the auto shifts would actually damage the transmission after a while not to mention the fact that it would confuse the brake assist system.
BTW if you have the auto in "C" mode it will be lazier. These guys with the V8's wouldn't probably notice but on a CLK200K it makes a difference. Also as this car is new it may be sluggish plus the transmission adapts to your driving style ! Using manual mode doesn't make my car any quicker !

Note: I drive my car about as hard as you can, so its not that the tranny adapted to a lazy driving style.

sorry for not replying earlier.. I agree with italian.. when the rev. is low, there is a huge response delay with the auto-mode... in some way, ben is right actually, even in the manual mode, if you keep the same gear and accelerate from a low rev. you get the same acceleration.. when I said I got it covered with manual-mode, I meant power shifts... rev. is low, I shift down and accelerate, so I dont have any delays after hitting gas...
today I heard another rumour that I shouldn't exceed 100km/h for the first 2000 km... I think ppl are making up stuff for me to keep me away from driving the car

My point was that I dont have a delay when I need to shift. If I plant it the tranny shifts down before I reach the floor.
I always drive gently in "C" mode and very aggresively in "S" mode FWIW !
