Want to Purchase Escort Passport 8500 X50 and Hardwire it...

I am in the process of purchasing an Escort Passport 8500 X50, however, I do not want a cord from my windsheild hanging down to my cigarette lighter. I want to do a clean installation where the detector sites at the bottom of the center of the windsheild or something like that.

For this installation can I Do It myself or do I need to hire somebody. I was also told I need a fuse. Is this the right fuse for the CLK? -- Fuse

How much would it cost for a proper installation and what kind of shop would do this for me?

If somebody knows how to do this, and they are in the NY area, I will meet up with you, and you can install it for me if you have experience in doing this.

-Lawrence

Also Should i Go for V1 or Escort 8500 X50???

I have a V1 hardwired to the overhead console, and it was relatively easy to DIY. A search of the forum posts in this area should return a thread about the install.

I have the Escort 8500 X50 in my 2004 CLK AMG.

I mounted mine to the right of the mirror. I tucked the cord under the windshield/headliner. I pulled down the a pillar (I have a convirtible) and ran the wire across it to the door jam area. I then ran the wir to the door fuse box, and tied it into the radio fuse. The direct wire has a fuse biult into it. There is a metal screw connected to the body of the car right there at the fuse box also. I screwed in the ground wirte there. I then Ran the Smart Display through the dash and mounted it on the arch to the left of the steering wheel.

The only problem, if it really is a problem, is that the radio is a hot wire and is always on, so my detector does not turn off when I turn the car off. I was to lazy to go through the firewall to get to the cigarette lighter fuse located in the engine wheel.

Also of note, sometimes a bad signal gets sent to the escort from the Mercedes when you crank the car. The escort will disploay "Service Required" and start beeping. Don't believe it, just unplug it and replug it. This also happens in wifes Sequoia

This is basically the same setup I have, but I have the v1 with concealed display, and I tapped into a window fuse, so it's also hot at all times.

And to answer the above mentioned question... I love my V1. I ran Passport at the same time with the V1 and V1 warned me much more in advance than the Passport

If I was close, I'd do it, because it would seriously take only 10-15 minutes... but I'm pretty far away.

Your location shows up as NY. As in NYC? If it is, there are some good audio shops on Brighton beach, where they will install the V1 so no cop would ever be able to find it. The V1 arrows would show up integrated in the rear view mirror, and the radar itself will be hidden somewhere inside the vehicles, that probably you won't even know where.
