Yeah, I realize I'm feeding the troll, but I'm doing it intentionally. Sort of like if you have an unreasonably obnoxious and opinionated neighbor, so you put up yard signs for some candidate or issue you know he rabidly opposes just to watch him go nuts. At some level it's just sort of sophomoric silliness, but at some other level it's sort of fascinating to wonder why someone would keep coming back with long winded posts about oil to an audience that is not listening. But I'm sorta bored with it now. At the end of the day, all you have to show for your fun is a bunch of holes in your yard from sign posts.

No, Mercedes doesn't recommend a specific oil. They recommend a specific spec, that MANY oils meet, but only very few pay the licensing fees for. It's also a "catch all" recommendation for every possible climate and circumstance.
Knowing and understanding this is the point of this thread. It's not some idiotic zooscape for insecure and inexperienced members who lack any technical skills.
The view count goes up because there is something to learn for the vast number of people. Just because you are unable to "get it" doesn't mean it's not true.

In fact, the new generic ACEA A3 spec exceeds Mercedes' specs? Just like I explained, any A3 oil is more than good in MB applications.
Even though newer and better oils are right there on the shelf for the same as Mobil 1, I understand that some dudes are too afraid or too dumb to try it. They need the authority figure "in a shirt" w/a MB logo to scare them into not asking questions....especially questions the big bad service man doesn't even know.
So here it is, why wouldn't someone use it?

I must look better around my engine bay, I must have missed the stickers for those 50-60 other oils Mercedes also recommends. Approved does not equal recommends. Yes they are perfectly fine to use but Mercedes recommended Mobil 1, probably for corporate reasons.

I have a friend, Doug Hillary, who is a guest of Mobil every year at 24hr Nurburgring. He is a Mobil 1 0w-40 fanatic....but, in some of his cars he uses M1 5w-40, when 0w-40 is speced. There are reasons for his selection which lay beyond the scope of this thread, just know that there ~are~ reasons.
He has a few 911s, and uses different oil in the different model's engines. Believe me, there are stickers in the Porsche engine bay too.
Before that it was Shell...
So, it's nearly irrelevant to people whose experience lies further than under the hood of the ir own car.
Castrol is the official oil of Audi, 10x winner of LeMans...
Does this matter to me? It's embossed on my oil cap...do I need a pretty sticker to scare me???

For the CLK 55...? It depends on how you drive it and climate as well as desired change interval.
For 3000-6000 changes in warm climate, hell...use a 15w-40 truck oil, Mobil's 1300S is silky-smooth.
Do you consume oil? Is price a factor, do you DiY changes...?
Consider the Mobil 1 High Miles line. It has the extra high additive levels we need to combat alcohol, sulphur and the rich North America tune for low NOx. The low additive type oils like M1 ESP, Castrol SLX Pro are for clean European fuel grades and leaner tune allowing higher CO2. EU regs DO NOT ALLOW high additive oils!!! You people need to get a clue.
The Mobil 1 HiMiles 10w-40 is really thick too...nice and smooth. You can run it as long as you want, 200hrs should be no problem. Get a used oil lab report from someplace like Caterpillar or Blackstone, since you have a hi-performance engine. It's like a race oil that lasts long. A ton of boron makes it all happen, something no race oil has.
Mix it with the thick 30 weight M1 HM if you want for climate or mpg....?
It is far more robust than the 0w-40, HT/HS of 4.1cP iirc. It's not speced in new Mercedes for MPG and all climate reasons. Like I said, the 0w-40 is a catch-all recommendation for those reasons. If I was in the arctic.....0w-20 it would be.

Have a look back through. I have said on multiple occasions that I am sure there are many better oils than Mobil 1. It is not the best oil available for our cars but it is still a very good oil and well known to be approved by Mercedes. I don't know why you want to have this argument continuously when we agree already. So no, there is no huge mechanical advantage.
But I still don't see how Mercedes could not be recommending Mobil 1. A manufacturer is not going to allow "product placement" of something they don't recommend.
But please continue exuding your charisma on us all. By they way I was considering using motul 8100 0w40 max, could you please post a huge photo of it if you haven't already.

Why would you purchase a European oil, that is just re-imported from the USA anyway? Slight chance it's just run of the mill Korean base stock, do you need the validation of a fancy-boy name on it? I forgot we're all about stickers, labels and approvals. Is this part of the Mercedes **** heritage?
So, you're going to pay a premium for an oil of only ~standard~ quality? I don't get it, with some of the more advanced products right on the shelf.
Generally, 0w-40 means high volatility, and rapid shear. Mobil 1 is notorious for high iron wear too....I forgot about that one. Doubt if you need the cold flow of a 0w-40 for a non-turbo, so maybe try a 5w-40, but you'll likely end up with no better an oil than drum "Belgian" Syntec 5w-40 which is an ancient high Mg diesel engine oil that carries specs from 1998. Perfect for you.
Wow, there are a lot of "Edge" oils in Castrol's search engine. Guess what, any of them would work in our engine given the right climate, driving cycle and style, with the goal of more power, economy or whatever...even seal conditioning. ALL oils excel in wear control, the rest is just labels and stickers.

Are you trying to say Mobil 1 is *not* recommended, or are you implying Mobil 1 is *exclusively* recommended? Those are two different things you are conflating. That's why I said it's not about rhetorical questions.
I'll make it as clear as possible, Mobil is one of a large number of recommended oils. They pay even more licence fees than the others to have an exclusive *sticker* under the hood.
So, it comes back to what matters more, the actual technical specifications, or the license list or a sticker? I say general knowledge beats them all.
