Amg rims still not wide enough!

Do all you other 500 owners think that the staggered setup on the clk's is a bit weak. My car keeps on wheel spinning and its starting to **** me off. Im not even flooring it and it spins sometimes.

I am thinking of getting the old style amg wheels off the sl500 sport. Saw one today the wheels are 18" and have way more dish compared to the clk ones. Im not too sure what J the wheels are but i know they are definatley wider. The dish on the front of the sl is like the dish on the rear of my clk.. bit of a joke considering they have the same bhp.

Has anyone else done this??

Mike

Well, more than likely, the Sl500 wheels won't fit the CLK without some modification.

man, it's your tires.

I have the stock 245/40/17 in the rear.

I've had Michelin:
Pilot Sport
Pilot Sport A/S
Pilot Sport PS2

ALL of the SPUN in 1st gear.

I just got a set of BFG KDW tires. Doesn't spin at all! Even in the rain. it is unbeliveable.

I race my roommate yesterday, he has a 400+ hp Pontiac Firehawk with 275's on the back.
To 60 MPH in the dry, were even.
In the wet i'll have 3 car lengths on him.

it's all about the tires.

I totally agree - it's your tires. What do you run now, and how old are they?

I use stock 245/40R17 size, and the rears have a pair of well-worn ContiSportContact (the original, not 2 or 3) tires. It was better when they would newer, since the outside compount is better than the inside.

When the tires were newer, with my CLK500, from a red stop light to green, and suddenly flooring it, no wheel spin. My front suspension lifts a bit, my own head snaps back, and the thing takes off like a rocket with not even a squeak.

On the other hand, I've only got 6K on them, and I'm getting close to the wear bars. Like the service manager says - it all depends on driving style.

Mee too! Stock wheels, good tires (dunno what they are, would have to go look), little chirp at full throttle from stop (ESP on), but no spin.

ESP off is another story: https://mbworld.org/forums/clk-class-w209/246449-esp-off.html

Get some Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star Spec. They are priced moderately well compared to Pirelli, BFG, and Yokohama. They are exellent at griping the road. You'll feel like you're on a rail.

well i recently just bought the car from mercedes, being certified it came with brand new conti's. The tyres are a good brand and when i look at the rear end of my car the tyres definatley look wide.. so there definately meaty..around corners its like the car is stuck to the road.. but when i feel the urge to give it some power at stand still it will just wheelspin... i have just learnt not to be too aggressive at standstill and wait till the car is rolling at around 20mph to give it some juice.. this way i dont get any spin... just a sore neck

What i love about my car is that my dad has an sl500 2006 and he acutally prefers to drive my car.. he think that the sl is a handful and doesnt really know how the car is going to react. But with the clk you know where the car is around bends so on... you can feel the road through the steering wheel more.

Also the sl is a pain in the *** to get in and out of.

CLK for the WIN!!!!

Got a question though, do you other guys with 500's have drilled front disks? I was suprised to find mine are not and my dad's sl with the same engine has drilled disks. I can sometime smell the brakes when i get out the car.. obvious sigh on overheating.

I don't have the 500 but the 550, and it has drilled rotors.

Your dad is insane if he prefers the drive the CLK rather than the SL.

Stock tires are crap anyway. If you want sticky, get extreme performance tires.

I don't get it - why do you guys get wheel spin when I don't? My ContiSportContacts (original, not 2 or 3) pretty much never spin, and my car REALLY goes! (But after 7K miles, they're down to the wear bars.)

On the other hand, my Dunlop winters spin like crazy, so I have to run the car in "C" mode to have a prayer of driving normally with those on. Those things have no grip at all.

+100000

Z1s are borderline race tires when it comes to traction, without any of the downsides. Get some Z1s and you will have zero problems.
