engine noise on acceleration

has anyone noticed a "ticking noise" in 500 motor when accelerating from about 1800 rpm to 4000 rpm. i cannot decide if its noisy injectors, noisy valvetrain, a normal variant, or im nuts. thanks,

Try to compare it to another 500. If there are not any available in your area ask your service rep to call your cell when one is in for service, perhaps a tech/service writer will drive you around the lot.

Hi jules-

I notice a slight ticking when the engine is cold but not when it has reached normal operating temps. I think this is quite normal. My 01' Corvette was the same way.

Do you notice any change in sound as it warms up ?

I've noticed the "ticking" noise since day 1...it sounds much like a diesel engine on idle and at lower RPMs. If you've been following the E-class forum, this is a widely documented problem with the 5.0 liter engine. Seems like MB screwed the pooch mounting the 5.0 to the E and CLK frames. There is service bulletin out for the E-class but I'm not sure if it mentions the CLK. I'm going to go to a dealer soon to get it checked out. It is definately a motor mounts issue, whether the dealer wants to admit it or not.

yes thats it

yes thats the noise.....almost like a diesel knock. you say its the motor mounts...how can a motor mount make that noise? it sounds as if its in the engine itself.

Check the W211 forum for bulletin numbers regarding the noisy engine mounts - Appearntly a number of e owners had this problem and it was fixed by their dealers. It affects all the 500 engines.

I'm no mechanic, so I don't know how exactly the motor mount causes the noise. Another way to check if you have the problem, is to idle your engine and see if your car shakes a bit (from side to side). That happens sometimes. Also, you can pop the hood, have someone rev the engine a bit, and you will notice the engine move side-to-side. Evidently, the way the motor is mounted to the car's frame needs to be reinforced.

The only weird thing is I haven't heard anything about the CLK500s and this bulletin. It definately is out for the E500 and the problem is one and the same. I guess we will have to go to our dealers and just ask. One dealer I went to said "oh that sound is normal". Basically a load of crap because it is well documented on the E500s.

i drove..

i drove today with my brother i law who is a master mechanic (mostly heavy equiptment, though he has a panache for german cruisers) he says the noise is definately abnormal, though he cannot imagine that its from the engine mounts. i gave him the vehicle for the night to take to his shop, and see if he can isolate the noise source. ill let you know....

well, according to my brother in law, the noise COULD be from the engine mounts. he says that with the car in drive, and a light load, there is a resonance coming from the bottom of the engine compartment, however he could not definitively isolate the source.
he says the engine is not moving from side to side an inordinante amount which would indicate weak, or broken mounts, however depending on the construction, and harmonic characteristics of the mount, it may be transmitting the noise we hear.
well, its off to the dealer...

got my mounts

well, i finally had my motor mounts replaced.. took two trips...one to verify the concern, and the second to replace the mounts. they had to be ordered, and it took almost 3 weeks to get. now under light acceleration the engine purrs ....no more knocking!!! I just crossed 1700 miles on the odometer, and have just begun to "play " with it a little.

How loud was the knocking? Was it very noticeable or slight?
What was your vehicles production date?

Thanks

Took my Jan build in for wiperblades they fixed the driverds side(no more missed areas while wiping) and made passenger side noisy ( no chatter but rubber rubbing too much) I also asked if I needed the motor mounts done they said I did and they replaced them, apparently it is a little bit more involved than changing them on the 208 as the sway bar and steering rack need to be removed and the flywheel adaptation needs to be reset, anyway the car is quieter but it wasn't so bad before. I also have to bring the car back to address the pulling to the right problem, it's interesting prior to the motor mounts being serviced the car pulled to the right and the wheel pointed right, now the car still pulls to the right but the wheel needs to be held to the left??? I guess it had to do with the steering rack RR for the mounts.
